Today, on National Housing Day, we reflect on the critical importance of housing as a foundation for a safe, healthy, and vibrant life. Here at Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region, we witness daily the transformative power of affordable homeownership—not just for individuals, but for entire communities. Access to safe, decent, and affordable housing is more than a basic need; it’s a launchpad for opportunities. It empowers families, stabilizes neighborhoods, and builds brighter futures. Yet, the housing crisis in the City of Peterborough and Peterborough County remains a pressing challenge. Rising costs and limited availability mean too many people are struggling to find a place to call home. We believe in the power of partnership to tackle this issue head-on. Together with our donors, volunteers, and community partners, we’re making strides to create affordable housing solutions. Every nail hammered, every home built, and every family supported represents hope, resilience, and a step toward housing equity. Just a week ago, we celebrated an incredible milestone with our new homeowners at #21LeahysLane! With this dedication, a total of 53 families now have a safe, decent, and affordable place to call home. Today, I had the privilege of celebrating the 60th anniversary of one of our most dedicated and loyal volunteers at Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region: Harry and Sylvia Pearson. Harry has been an essential part of nearly every single-family and semi-detached home we've built since 2004. Currently, he volunteers with our kitchen removal and salvage team. Six months ago, Harry suffered a stroke, and when I visited him in the hospital, he was already focused on his recovery, determined to get back on his feet in time to help finish the renovations for our new ReStore in Lakefield. In lieu of a gift, we made a donation to Habitat for Humanity Peterborough & Kawartha Region in Harry and Sylvia’s honour, celebrating their incredible contribution to our community. #dedication #volunteers #love #enduringlove
