This event, hosted by the Youth Climate Corps BC through the City of Vancouver, will be helpful for anyone interested in building climate resilience and achieving cost-saving improvements to their home. The Climate Friendly Home Information Sessions provide generalized recommendations for homeowners across the Lower Mainland. These sessions provide a space for community engagement surrounding climate resilience, sharing ideas on green living, and creating a discourse around climate-friendly homes and tangible actions that may be taken. The session on January 25 is free, but space is limited, sign up at the registration link below. ☀️ https://lnkd.in/gRZWFJeE #ClimateResilience #GreenLiving

Lobbies can be so much more than a place to transit through or pick up mail at. Multi-purpose lobbies with activation features like soft seating, tables, WiFi, shared bookshelves, or toys for kids encourage neighbours to linger and connect with one another. The lobby in Quayside Village in North Vancouver looks so inviting, doesn't it? 💗
Can a lobby build community? Lobbies often feel uninviting and empty, with little opportunity to stop and linger beyond picking up your mail. Can they become more than that? In this cohousing community, neighbours use the lobby to connect and share with one another. Residents wanted their lobby to be a cozy and warm place, so they brought in a bulletin board, board games, library, and a reading nook. By shaping the space together, the community creates a strong sense of connection and care. Housing is so much more than four walls and a roof: it is critical to economic, health, safety and social infrastructure. Thank you to *everyone* who joined the Housing That Connects Us Design Jam, hosted by Renewable Cities, and for sharing innovative ways to make multi-unit housing more socially connected, climate resilient, and adaptable. We are blown away by all of the creative ideas - from communal rooftop gardens, south facing amenity spaces, to adding more Indigenous plants (and more!) - and we think you will be, too. Dive into the illustrations, details, and access the full report below. 🪴 https://lnkd.in/g8MuRw4S #RenewableCities #DesignJam #ResilientHousing #SocialConnection

An excellent and encouraging read from Sophie Thompson here, about why it's important that we advocate for approaching urban design and housing with wellbeing in mind. "But things are now changing, and for the better. It’s much easier to get people to sit up and listen to the argument for quality and sociability in our public spaces. To recognise that these are at the very heart of our communities, and where people from all walks of life can come together." https://lnkd.in/dcqjigtP

What makes a great courtyard? In this affordable family housing project, the courtyard is the heart of the community, creating opportunities for people of all ages to connect—in small and big groups. Residents can garden, play, and hang out together. Locating the laundry room on the courtyard allows parents to do laundry while kids play safely. The balconies that overlook the courtyard connect private spaces to shared spaces, creating an overall sense of community.
