C40 is a network of nearly 100 world-leading cities taking urgent action to confront the climate crisis. 🌳 🚴♀️
About us
C40 is a network of nearly 100 mayors of the world’s leading cities who are working to deliver the urgent action needed right now to confront the climate crisis and create a future where everyone, everywhere, can thrive. Mayors of C40 cities are committed to using a science-based and people-focused approach to help the world limit global heating to 1.5°C and build healthy, equitable and resilient communities. Through a Global Green New Deal, mayors are working alongside a broad coalition of representatives from labour, business, the youth climate movement and civil society to go further and faster than ever before. The current co-chairs of C40 are Mayor of London Sadiq Khan and Mayor of Freetown Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr. Three-term Mayor of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg serves as President of the Board. C40’s work is made possible by our three strategic funders: Bloomberg Philanthropies, Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF), and Realdania.

Africa is responsible for less than 4% of global emissions but is disproportionately affected by climate breakdown. With record temperatures and devastating natural disasters, people are increasingly at risk. The time to act is now. Next week, city leaders will come together at the UrbanShift Africa Forum in Nairobi, Kenya, and share how they are scaling up ambitious, people-centred climate action in cities to create a safer and healthier future for all Africans in urban centres. Air pollution accounted for 8.1 million deaths in 2021, but cities are fighting back with inclusive and innovative measures to clean the air we breathe. Clean air action is a transformative opportunity for cities. It delivers major public health benefits, increases residents' wellbeing, and spurs economic growth. See what cities like London, Freetown and Delhi are doing to improve air quality and public health in our 2024 Clean Air Accelerator progress report. https://lnkd.in/e2FA64CZ

🌡️ The number of cities exposed to extreme heat will nearly triple by 2050. To help cities analyse potential risks that may arise as a result of extreme heat, we’re excited to be part of the IBM Sustainability Accelerator’s latest cohort for resilient cities, alongside Janaagraha, Kota Kita Foundation, Mass General Brigham, and UN World Food Programme WFP. By applying IBM technologies alongside an ecosystem of experts to enhance and scale projects aligned to the United Nations SDGs, C40 will create a data-driven, AI-powered solution to help keep city residents safe from rising temperatures. More than 200 million people across 350+ cities experience summer temperatures exceeding 35°C (95°F). Extreme heat comes at a high economic cost, with losses due to heat stress projected to rise from $280 billion in 1995 to $2.4 trillion by 2030, hitting lower-income countries the hardest. At the African Urban Heat Summit hosted in Freetown by C40 Cities Co-Chair Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr OBE and Climate Resilience for All, C40 Managing Director for Climate Solutions & Networks Cassie Sutherland called for scaled solutions across global cities, including shading infrastructure, more nature in cities, heat alerts, and cross-city collaboration, to mitigate these growing challenges. #AfricanUrbanHeatSummit

A greener, low-carbon construction sector will not only benefit the environment, but also create millions of jobs and help ease the housing crisis in London. This is a great example of how phasing out fossil fuels in cities helps us get closer to a future where everyone, everywhere can thrive. “I’m proud that London is leading the way in the green transition of the construction sector…”, - Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan Learn more ⬇️ https://c40.me/3X8qwLd

We welcome the UK’s new national climate plan. C40 looks forward to working with the UK and other international climate leaders to deliver ambitious and inclusive national climate plans that keep equity and justice at the forefront. Cities, devolved administrations and national governments working together is the best way to deliver strong emission reduction targets, and secure the goals of the Paris Agreement - this is the essence of the CHAMP pledge which the UK has endorsed. https://lnkd.in/gRs4bjnk
