Today, with the support of the Government of Canada (Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada), we announced a $10.7 million investment in contributions to seven commercialization-focused R&D projects under our #FocusFund program. We were delighted to have Parliamentary Secretary Pam Damoff join us to celebrate this milestone in our network's history. Through this iteration of the Focus Fund, the seven selected high-potential projects, including: Illumisonics Inc. MIMOSA Diagnostics MOLLI Surgical Oncoustics Profound Medical Inc. Radialis, and Rogue Research Inc, will integrate #machinelearning capabilities into their #imageguidedtherapy technologies. Focus Fund recipients will also invest an additional $21.3 million into their projects for a total influx of $32 million into the Canadian #IGT sector. The Focus Fund contributions will help attract investments into these Canadian technology companies, create jobs for highly skilled professionals, and cement Canada’s status as a global leader in IGT and #AI innovation. Check out our latest publication: Automated Whole Slide Imaging for Label-Free Histology Using Photon Absorption Remote Sensing Microscopy Pathologists rely on histochemical stains to impart contrast in thin translucent tissue samples, revealing tissue features necessary for identifying pathological conditions. Unfortunately, the chemical labeling process is destructive and often irreversible or challenging to undo, imposing practical limits on the number of stains that can be applied to the same tissue section. Here we develop a label-free whole slide scanner using Photon Absorption Remote Sensing (PARS) microscopy, allowing for imaging of thin, transmissible tissue samples without chemical staining. Peak signal-to-noise ratio and in-focus acquisitions are achieved across entire tissue sections using the scattering signal from the PARS detection beam to measure the optimal focal plane. Whole slide images (WSI) are seamlessly stitched together using a custom contrast leveling algorithm. PARS WSIs are presented at standard 40x magnification in malignant human breast and skin samples. Identical tissue sections are subsequently H&E stained and brightfield imaged. The one-to-one WSIs from both modalities are visually and quantitatively compared. Correspondence of subcellular diagnostic details is shown between both PARS and H&E WSIs and virtual H&E staining of an entire PARS WSI is demonstrated. The one-to-one WSI from both modalities show quantitative similarity in nuclear features and structural information. The PARS WSIs are compatible with existing digital pathology tools, and samples remain suitable for histochemical, immunohistochemical, and other staining techniques. University of Waterloo Faculty of Engineering researchers create an AI-powered digital imaging system to speed up biopsy results. "Our primary goal is to provide patients with timely and accurate diagnoses, reducing the need for multiple surgeries and minimizing the risk of cancer spread," said Dr. Parsin Haji Reza, lead researcher and a professor in Waterloo’s Department of Systems Design Engineering. The Photon Absorption Remote Sensing (PARS) system, an innovative, built-from-scratch technology, is faster than traditional cancer-detection methods and aims to deliver a diagnosis in minutes — enabling prompt surgical intervention.
