It’s here – the final memory for our INCITE 25th anniversary celebration! For this closing thought, I was asked to share that “A-ha moment” when I knew Incite was on its way to something special. That’s not an easy question to answer. I’m not sure there has been a singular moment. There was the first big shopping trip to Staples to load up on office supplies. Or perhaps that first major client pitch where we won a 6-figure engagement. There’s hiring our first full-time employee, or when a baby-faced Darren Tonn (he's barely aged!) merged his design business into Incite. Or the Incite branded toques! I also reminisce often about the time our entire team went to Jasper to celebrate our 10th anniversary at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge and thinking, “We finally made it to the big leagues.” I also recognize that for every win, there have been great challenges and losses. Those moments also have important stories to tell and, more importantly, lessons to learn from. Each up and down has contributed to what can only be described as an incredible 25-year ride. The entrepreneurial journey has a strange way of pulling you along, resetting the finish line constantly along the way. The imposter syndrome that I and many business owners experience never goes away; you just get more comfortable living with it. What I do know for certain is that the clients, colleagues, and other wonderful people I’ve had the opportunity to work with continue to motivate me and bring a true sense of fulfillment to my life. I can’t wait to see what 2025 has in store for us, and am forever grateful for everything Incite has taught me these last 25 years. As we celebrate 25 years of success, one thing stands out above all: the incredible privilege of working with small businesses and entrepreneurs. Over the past 25 years, we've had the opportunity to partner with a wide range of clients, but there's something uniquely rewarding about helping small business owners and entrepreneurs reach their goals. Entrepreneurs are the heart of our economy, and it’s been both inspiring and exciting to be part of their journey. Entrepreneurs bring a unique energy to the table. They're innovative, driven, and passionate, and their determination to turn visions into reality is contagious. When we collaborate with small business owners, we often see the business equivalent of an artist at work—someone molding ideas into tangible success. The enthusiasm that entrepreneurs bring to strategic planning or to a new marketing initiative often injects fresh energy into our work as well. Their willingness to take risks, to be bold, and to break new ground aligns perfectly with our own commitment to thinking strategically and acting decisively. One of the greatest privileges of our work is seeing these entrepreneurs succeed. Watching a small business evolve into a growing enterprise, scaling up to new heights, is immensely satisfying. Knowing we played even a small role in that growth is always a reminder of why we do what we do. For over two decades, we’ve helped entrepreneurs and small business owners navigate the complexities of growth. Their path is not easy nor for the faint of heart. In this, our 24th memory post, we tip our hats with gratitude to the many small business clients we’ve served. We see you and we thank you! This is memory 24/25. You shouldn't do business with friends' is a fairly common refrain in our line of work. Here at INCITE, we feel differently. Working with people you trust, connect with, learn from, and ultimately befriend, makes doing business with friends a natural outcome. Much like a close friendship, a positive client relationship requires effort, intention, and even a few boundaries. You have to set expectations early and discuss how you will navigate inevitable challenges, which is especially important for people who were your friend before they became your client. Client relationships that blossom into friendships offer the space to dig deep and tackle important, sensitive work. They challenge you to bring your best self and to raise your game. Friends who become clients. Clients who become friends. We've seen both work tremendously well, and frankly, we wouldn't have it any other way. This is lesson 23/25. As we celebrate 25 years at Incite, one standout memory is the journey that led us to Foundry Conferences & Events (now Foundry Events)—a venture that grew from our roots in hosting impactful client events into something so much larger. In Incite’s early years, events were central to helping clients connect meaningfully with their audiences. By 2015, we saw the potential for a dedicated platform to elevate these experiences, so we joined forces with Pomeroy Lodging and Ryan Vestby to create Foundry. Our vision? To build high-impact, purposeful events that engage, inspire, and drive real connections. Over the years, Foundry evolved into a force for bringing business leaders together across Alberta. Our signature conference, 55 North, became a cornerstone, gathering leaders from diverse industries to learn, connect, and share ideas in our own backyard. A milestone moment for us came at the beginning of 2022 when Erin Clyde, a former Incite team member, took full ownership of Foundry. Under Erin’s leadership, the Foundry Events team continues to push the boundaries, hosting unforgettable experiences that unite communities and elevate organizations. They host everything from immersive retreats and engaging community celebrations to annual conferences that spark growth and innovation. We are grateful for the collaboration that grew this seed of an idea, energized by what we built together, and thrilled to see Foundry continue to flourish in its mission of connecting and inspiring people in meaningful ways. #Incite25 #FoundryEvents #CommunityImpact #Collaboration #AlbertaEvents This is memory 23/25. At INCITE, we like to use an analogy of training for a sport to explain the importance of effective communication: it takes consistent effort, repetition, and variety to make a real impact. In hockey, there are two types of players: the first hits the ice with enthusiasm but loses steam quickly, while the second shows up consistently but only focuses on one skill. Neither becomes a standout player. To improve, you need to work on all aspects—stickhandling, shooting, skating—with consistency over time. Communications work the same way. You can’t send one press release, email, or social post and expect to make an impact. It’s not enough to simply “show up”—you need to communicate through multiple channels to ensure your message truly resonates. Repetition is key—studies suggest people need to hear a message at least seven times before it sticks. By communicating frequently, using a variety of channels, and repeating key points, you’ll ensure your message cuts through the noise and reaches your audience. Strong communication requires a commitment to consistent practice across all aspects—just as Connor McDavid didn’t become a star overnight, your message will resonate more deeply with frequency and consistency. 25 years in business has provided ample opportunities for me to connect and collaborate with the business community. The belief that a rising tide raises all ships captures the spirit of professionals in our city. I am grateful for the open-minded, trusting, helpful mindset that most business leaders and professional associations espouse here in Edmonton. A big shout out to EO Edmonton, Edmonton Executives Association, Synergy Network, IABC Edmonton, Advertising Club of Edmonton, and others for their role in helping to shape the Edmonton business community. I've always felt welcomed into new groups and have benefited from mentorship from many fellow "competitors" over the years. Of significant note would be my Board role with Synergy Network between 2012 and 2018, and my current experience on EO Edmonton's Board, including as this year's Chapter President. The opportunity to work with and serve fellow business leaders is certainly a 25th anniversary memory of note as we move close to the end of our year of recognizing key moments in the evolution of INCITE. If you aren't actively involved in a professional association, I'd encourage you to check one out. Your ability to both learn from and lift up your fellow leaders is a gift worth seeking.

At INCITE, we’ve learned that the solutions we seek often lie in the work we’re most tempted to avoid. There are no shortcuts or easy answers in meaningful growth—progress happens when we lean into the hard choices and tackle challenges head-on. Why do we shy away from this work? Often, it’s because it feels daunting, uncomfortable, or pushes us outside our comfort zones. But that discomfort is where real change starts. It’s in the difficult conversations, the deep strategic shifts, and the moments where we confront our blind spots that true progress is made. This is where potential is unlocked and where clients make the most significant leaps forward. If you find yourself avoiding something, it’s likely the very thing that will drive the most impact. Embrace the tough work—that’s where the magic happens.
