One of the most profound life lessons I’ve learned didn’t come from books or classrooms; it came from watching and listening to those who have faced some of life’s toughest challenges—addicts and alcoholics. Their words stuck with me: “If you prioritize it, you can afford it.” In business, just as in life, we often see critical areas being neglected, usually because they don’t feel like the “urgent” thing in the moment. We say we can’t “afford” it—be it in time, resources, or focus. But the reality is, if it’s truly important, we can always find a way. Consider the areas within a company that are often put on the back burner—investments in employee training, customer experience improvements, or even technology upgrades. These are the backbone of a thriving business, yet sometimes they get passed over. But imagine what would happen if we made a conscious decision to prioritize them. When we treat these areas as essential, they become manageable. Teams perform better, clients feel valued, and the organization moves toward sustainable growth. So here’s my takeaway: If you’re saying you can’t afford it, ask yourself if you’re actually prioritizing it. Shift your focus, make a plan, and the resources will follow.
