What an incredible reflection—thank you for sharing! We're so proud of the impact the Quantum Cryptography School for Young Students (now known as the Quantum School for Young Students (#QSYS)) has had over the years and thrilled to see how it’s inspired alumni like you to continue making quantum science accessible to everyone. I can't believe this was 13 years ago... Somehow, for whatever reason, Martin Laforest decided it was a good idea to let me teach a quantum theory lecture to these high schoolers that were flown in to the Quantum Cryptography School For Young Students program at the Institute for Quantum Computing. And I think this program continues on to this day! Kudos to IQC and the University of Waterloo for continuing to embark on such an ambitious program. Makes me proud to be an alumnus :). I look back on these years fondly, and I often wish that everyone who's interested in physics, math, or quantum, no matter who they are or where they're from, could have the same opportunity as these high schoolers did. I feel as though most people think quantum is beyond them, this big scary thing that they can't learn properly, a problem perpetuated by some public figures who decide you can't either (shame on them), and so they resort to simple pop sci explanations that benefit no one. That's why I'm developing a course, accessible to everyone with only high school level math knowledge, to learn (at least a little bit) of quantum theory, properly. This won't be edu-tainment... it will be proper education! Carefully curated material, tons of pen and paper exercises, diagnostic testing, etc. Feel free to drop your email in the link in the comments if you're interested :)

In SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics: The Quantum EncrYption and Science Satellite represents a leap forward for quantum space communications: https://lnkd.in/gNxzHr5q IQC affiliate member Thomas Jennewein pioneered the QEYSSat mission, which has multi-national collaborators. Katanya B. Kuntz, PhD, research associate and QEYSSat Science Team Coordinator, spoke with Dr Rebecca Pool at SPIE. “Many satellites are primarily downlink satellites and transmit signals from space to Earth as it can be easier to put your quantum source in space and keep your sensitive quantum detectors on the ground. But we believe there’s an advantage in having your quantum sources on the ground as you can then more easily swap in your better technology as it develops.” #IQC #quantum #QEYSSat #communications. #space
