The Quantum Insider reposted this
Founder Cambridge Quantum Computing/Quantinuum. Vice Chairman of the Board and also Chief Product Officer of Quantinuum
"The world's first topological qubit" !! Beyond the headline, which is gratifying and meaningful, there are a number of reasons why this matters to the quantum industry and the sector as a whole. The overall approach to topological quantum computing was inspired largely by Alexei Kitaev and Michael Freedman and built with long term focus by Microsoft Station Q. I first commissioned work into this in 2015 (Henrik Dreyer and Andrew Simmons) and we have explored a slightly different way of achieving the same end - a qubit that is naturally fault tolerant. The results that were published in the paper below is a stunning achievement and again reinforces how long-term plans are slowly but surely falling into place. Our work on non-abelian anyons sits alongside our work in QEC more generally as well as our collaboration with other experts. Whilst Microsoft continue to work on their own approach to Topological Qubits, and other academic institutions push the envelope as well, I could not be prouder of our work that included leading researchers from Harvard University and Caltech. We have an exciting period ahead on the whole topic of QEC, including some results on GHZ states and FT quantum computing that I know will continue to set the pace. Quantinuum lead the field here, and this year have helped the whole eco-system in creating landmark publications which ensure that we all benefit on the journey ahead. Our QEC team, lead overall by David Hayes has some eye popping results coming out soon. All of this is enabled by the world's most powerful quantum computer, bar none, and yes, confirming what I stated in my article from last week - watch out in 2025 for the first working "Quantum Supercomputer" that brings forward the overall timelines for real world impact. #topologicalquantumcomputing #topologicalqubits #quantumcomputing #quantumerrorcorrection https://lnkd.in/ejJE86sH

Researchers from Quantinuum, Harvard University, and Caltech have experimentally demonstrated a "true topological qubit" using a Z₃ toric code. This approach encodes quantum information with enhanced error resistance, representing a step toward fault-tolerant quantum computing. Building on research from 2015, the study highlights how quasiparticles called non-Abelian anyons can help protect quantum information, potentially reducing the resources required for error correction. A new study by Q-CTRL highlights a breakthrough in quantum error correction (QEC) techniques, offering a practical approach to reducing errors in quantum systems without the heavy resource demands of traditional methods. Key achievements include: 💥 Generating the largest-ever 75-qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state with just nine ancilla qubits. 💥 Achieving over 85% gate fidelity across 40 lattice sites—without requiring additional ancilla qubits. 💥 Combining QEC primitives with error suppression for a hybrid strategy that reduces errors while conserving resources. This approach balances error correction with practical hardware constraints, bringing us closer to scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computing on current-generation processors.
