The costliest climate-driven hazard contributing to this record payout was extreme flooding, while hailstorm damage in Alberta was also a significant factor. In the GTHA, floods are becoming more frequent and severe every year. We've seen repeated flooding in Toronto, Burlington and various parts of Hamilton from Dundas to the East End and Binbrook. Yet it's not just those whose basements are flooded who pay the price: rising insurance premiums affects everyone. So what can we do to mitigate the risks? Join Dr. Anabela Bonada, PhD, to explore the increasing threat of climate-driven flooding and learn practical strategies for individuals and communities to reduce its impact. The free webinar will take place on Wednesday March 19th from 7:00-8:30pm. Learn more and register here: https://lnkd.in/gxJVjmJe

🌧️ ⚠️ Prepare for Flood Season⚠️ 🌧️ If you're in Southern Ontario, you likely received a weather alert on your phone for rain on Tuesday March 4th and Wednesday March 5th. The rain, along with melting snow and frozen ground increases the chances of flooding, because the ground can't absorb the water. Prepare your home for flooding by following step 1 of the "Three Steps to Cost-Effective Home Flood Protection" infographic, which can be done right now! Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gq6Z3Gtt

Caroline Metz and Kathryn Bakos participated in the annual Centennial College Mock Disaster (Feb 26) - a large-scale simulation and opportunity to observe real-world professionals and Centennial College students and faculty as they respond to disaster conditions in a fictitious city (at the Morningside Campus in Scarborough). This year's simulation featured severe weather — a heat wave and tornado, a soccer game final and outdoor concert taking place (10,000+ attendees), a bus crash with inmates, building collapses, hazardous materials incident, overcrowded hospitals and power outages. Professionals from many fields/disciplines including paramedicine, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, police, firefighters, social workers, early childhood education, and emergency and municipal communications specialists took part. Collaboration among students and professionals aimed to test their capabilities in managing a major disaster. The Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation | Centre Intact d’adaptation au climat provided guidance on adapting to extreme heat -- distributing heat protection infographics and speaking with people at the Intact Centre table. By building resilience and protecting individuals in advance of extreme heat, the worst impacts from heat can be prevented. Lives, health, and wellbeing can be safeguarded.

❄️🌍 This Winter Feels Extreme—But Is It? 🌍❄️ Massive snowbanks and bitter cold have defined this winter, but is it truly unusual? According to Anabela Bonada, PhD of the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation | Centre Intact d’adaptation au climat, this season’s snow isn’t breaking records—it’s just sticking around longer due to frigid temperatures. With El Niño and La Niña shaping our weather patterns, climate change is amplifying extremes, making both heavy snowfalls and intense rain events more frequent. And while shoveling may be the concern now, Dr. Bonada warns that flooding risks will rise when all this snow melts. 🏡💡 How prepared is your home? From simple fixes like clearing eavestroughs to advanced flood protection, taking proactive steps now can help prevent costly damage later. Download our free Home Flood Protection infographic: https://lnkd.in/gq6Z3Gtt 🔗 Read more about how climate change is reshaping our winters and what you can do to stay ahead. https://lnkd.in/gG-U3Ese #ClimateChange #ExtremeWeather #Winter2025 #FloodPreparedness
