Dr. Blair Feltmate was featured on episode 40 of The Conference Board of Canada's podcast Bright Future. He emphasizes that climate change is now irreversible, and our focus should shift to adapting to extreme weather events rather than solely reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The most effective approach to Canadians is communicating the facts clearly and accurately. Dr. Anabela Bonada, PhD, was featured on page 5 of The Hill Times Environment Policy Briefing on December 9, 2024. Here, she discusses how governments, industries, and the private sector must take action and promote straightforward, cost-effective solutions to educate the population on addressing the impacts of climate change. "With the tools, knowledge, and strategies already in hand, there is no excuse for delay. Climate adaptation must be Canada’s top priority in 2025 and in the years to come." The Ontario Government | Gouvernement de l’Ontario has introduced new legislation to update and enhance the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (EMCPA), aiming to create a more effective, coordinated, and comprehensive approach to emergency prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery at both the provincial and municipal levels. The Intact Centre has had the privilege of supporting the EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT ONTARIO (EMO) team, and you can find the Intact Centre’s resources highlighted throughout the Emergency Preparedness Resources website. Reducing risks and managing #naturalassets requires communities to work together at scale. Kudos to Town of Huntsville and Township of Lake of Bays for bringing over 60 municipal leaders together at their Integrated Watershed Management workshop last week. Thanks Trevor D. for the opportunity to contribute - I look forward to seeing what the group do next! Press release: https://lnkd.in/ejJiZkcq

On Tuesday December 3, 2024, Kathryn Bakos spoke at the #MaRSClimateImpact by MaRS Discovery District. She spoke in the session "Weathering the Storms: Building Resilient Cities," discussing how cities can better withstand extreme weather, support local governments in investing despite ongoing flood cleanup demands, and identify critical changes for resilience against climate-driven storms.

In this op-ed for The Hill Times, Dr. Anabela Bonada, PhD calls for urgent climate adaptation action. In 2024, Canada faced its highest-ever insured losses from extreme weather, totaling $8.1 billion. Uninsured losses added another $24–32 billion—enough to fund dozens of hospitals nationwide. These staggering numbers underscore a critical truth: adaptation is not optional—it’s essential. Dr. Bonada highlights the pressing need for action to protect homes, communities, and public resources. The time to adapt is now.
