Janet Rosenberg, Founding Principal of JRS, has been selected to this year’s Jury for the SHIFT2025 Challenge. The SHIFT Architecture Challenge is an aspirational, biennial Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) program that showcases the unique contributions of the architecture profession and architectural thinking in addressing important societal issues. This program invites OAA members, aspiring architects, and their collaborative teams to respond to a specific area of concern by utilizing their skills and insights. Joining Janet on the jury are Elizabeth English, professor at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture; Erica Gomirato, intern architect at Perry + Perry Architects; Shane Laptiste, architect and founder of Studio of Contemporary Architecture (SOCA); and Jean Philippe Larocque, co-founder of Larocque Elder Architects, Architectes Inc. and chair of the North Bay Society of Architects (NBSA). The theme of SHIFT2025 is “Reshaping Communities,” inviting professionals to explore sustainable solutions that tackle the challenges posed by climate change and social changes. Open to teams led by someone with OAA status, submissions are reviewed by the jury of experts to determine which proposals to spotlight. To learn more: https://lnkd.in/gZ2zG6YV

Congratulations to Giannone Petricone Associates Inc. Architects and The Royal Hotel for winning The Architect's Newspaper’s Best of Design Award in the Adaptive Reuse category for The Royal Annex! Once the stables of the heritage Royal Hotel, The Royal Annex now features offices, street front gallery/retail space, and five suites. A cohesive landscape strategy connects the hotel and The Royal Annex, located at 6 Ross Street. A simple and unified palette of unit pavers, Corten steel planters, and naturalized planting inspired by native species of Prince Edward County knits the property together. Introducing The Joan and Martin Goldfarb Gallery of York University! Evolving from the Art Gallery of York University, this new stand-alone gallery recently celebrated an important milestone with its Grand Opening on November 15. Designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects, the gallery features three exhibition spaces, a flexible event and performance pavilion, and the Visible Vault and Study Centre, where the permanent collection can be showcased to support student and scholarly research. As landscape architect for the project, JRS has designed spaces that emphasize the clean lines and contemporary aesthetic of the gallery. Incorporating low-maintenance, native planting, the design features a crushed stone plaza with tables and chairs that will serve as a communal gathering space at the gallery’s main entrance. We are excited to see construction finish on site in Spring 2025. MRKT, the second phase of the Revitalization of Alexandra Park in Downtown Toronto has recently topped off construction at 15 floors! The project is a two-tower mixed-use building which integrates market and community housing through the creation of shared programmatic elements: a community garden, a shared courtyard and fenced playground, an outdoor daycare play space, amenity terraces, and a public realm network that wraps around the building promoting community interaction, health, and wellness. Landscape construction is ongoing and targeted for completion in summer 2025. The project promotes a vibrant pedestrian-oriented neighbourhood that is equitable and livable. JRS has been involved since 2013 in the multi-phase, master-planned community by Tridel in strategic partnership with Toronto Community Housing. Canada Day marked the opening of the revitalized reflecting pool and dome fountain on the Grounds of the Alberta Legislature in Edmonton! The project is a collaborative effort by JRS and GEC Architecture working closely with Alberta Infrastructure. Originally built in the 1970’s, the water feature has been closed since 2020 due to age-related maintenance concerns. The new pool features barrier-free entry points, providing enhanced accessibility and safety. The Grounds and their fountains are a symbol of democracy and an important space for people to come together. Stay tuned for more images coming soon. Phase 2 of the project, currently under construction, includes new water experience features and is expected to be completed in 2025.
