New Brunswick is in the midst of the largest measles outbreak recorded in "several decades" - 80% of those infected are under the age of 18. As of 2023-24, more than a quarter of NB kindergarten students (~2,000 kids) did not meet the immunization requirements to enter public school. There are many reasons children's vaccination rates are dropping - one of those reasons is fear of needle pain. Solutions for Kids in Pain (SKIP) is a great resource for families and caregivers to ensure children have a positive experience managing pain associated with vaccination. Today, on #WorldPrematurityDay, I’m reflecting on our family’s journey with our own late preterm twins. Although their stay in the NICU was just a few weeks, those days left a lasting impact on us. We were grateful to see them grow stronger each day, but we also met many families facing longer, more challenging NICU stays. Some children had months of care ahead of them, and their parents’ strength and resilience was remarkable. Premature birth is still the leading cause of death for children under five, with millions of babies born too soon each year. As both a parent and a researcher, I am committed to supporting research and awareness that improve outcomes for children and families affected by prematurity and to helping every child, regardless of their start, thrive. To the families on this journey, we’re with you. ❌Myth: Medication is the only way to treat pain. ✅Fact: In addition to medications, there are lots of strategies that can turn down the pain dial and often they work best in combination. Physical strategies like applying heat, ice, or massaging the painful area can help. So can ‘psychosocial’ strategies like deep breathing or distraction through music, games, or guided imagery.
