Most of us have stared at an empty peanut butter jar or takeout container and asked: Can I recycle this? Do I need to rinse it? Will it end up in a landfill anyway? In the new @tarcherperigee book "TRASH TALK: An Eye-Opening Exploration of Our Planet's Dirtiest Problem", the ever-curious and talented Iris Gottlieb pulls back the curtain on the intricacies of the global trash production system and its contribution to climate change. With a non-shaming approach, readers are not told to do better, but rather given the context of how we all fit into the grand scheme of garbage that we usually can’t see. This comprehensive overview of the history, science, and current status of garbage around the world is full of shocking stories and trashy tidbits like: • There’s even garbage - including plastic!!! - on the moon, in the Mariana Trench, and on Mount Everest • Greenwashing by corporations like H&M and Starbucks are about looking better, not doing better • The often ignored racist and colonial underpinnings of today’s trash problem • Weird trash stories like the Great Horse Manure Crisis of 1894 and the Great Michigan Pizza Funeral • Taylor Swift’s clashes with the NYC sanitation dept • Lesser-known sources of waste like email, funerals, and dogs • The damage caused by Planned Obsolescence and the more nefarious Psychological Obsolescence • Some of the kookier ocean pollutants like the 1992 Friendly Floaties spill and 1997 Lego spill • It’s not all on the individual - using less plastic or eating locally are band aid solutions at best Complete with beautiful illustrations and several landfills’ worth of research, TRASH TALK shines a much-needed light on a system that has been broken for far too long, providing surprising, disgusting, and insightful information to better understand how we affect garbage and how it affects us. #TrashTalk You can check it out here:

Meet Ava Boehmer, a dedicated Girl Scout who just earned her Gold Award by raising awareness about the dangers of single-use plastics and their devastating effects on our oceans. Ava is eager to share her impactful message and inspire others to take action. After spending time living in Hawaii, Ava felt compelled to educate her community about plastic pollution and its harmful impact on marine life. Each year, a staggering 8 billion tons of plastic enter our oceans, breaking down into microplastics that pose a threat to various organisms and disrupt the delicate balance of our ecosystem. Ava has been proactive in her outreach efforts, participating in events such as the Plant City Gardens Earth Day Event and the 2023 Girl Scout Fest, where she educated attendees about the importance of reducing plastic use and offered eco-friendly alternatives. To further her mission, Ava has launched her own website, serving as a valuable resource for ongoing education and information. https://buff.ly/3zw08lT And you can find her on facebook at: https://buff.ly/3zxVLqq "I believe that small changes can lead to significant impacts," Ava said. "Simple switches, like using reusable water bottles instead of single-use plastics, can make a difference in keeping our oceans clean." Life Without Plastic is happy to promote Ava's inspiring work - way to go Ava!
