Cyberattacks against Canadian businesses continue to increase, as the Art Gallery of Ontario becomes the latest victim in a string of cyber attacks agains public institutions following breaches of public libraries, school boards, municipalities, and the Toronto Zoo in 2024. Public institutions like these represent easy, high-value targets with vast amounts of personal information that can be used to fuel phishing and password spraying campaigns against individuals. Increased funding and interest towards cybersecurity initiatives in the public sector is crucial to protect Canadian businesses and consumers from increasingly more capable and aggressive threat-actors. Calgary Public Library will be reopening its doors in a limited capacity as digital services are still down in the wake of yet another cyber breach in Canada. With systems still impacted, the extent of attack is still being evaluated. It is unclear whether the personal information of over 800,000 members may have been compromised in the breach. Another reminder that in 2024, as cyberattacks continue to rise, it is no longer a question of IF you will be targeted but when and how well protected your business will be. Following today's news about the American Water Cyberattack, the largest publicly traded U.S water and wastewater utility company, it is worth watching this fun and informative video from Practical Engineering outlining cybersecurity for critical infrastructure. A reminder that, more and more, threat actors are not only going after large companies, but are turning their focus to the SMB space where there is perception of potential "low-hanging fruit" that have not invested in cybersecurity. As IOT devices continue to propagate, it is important to remember that anything connected to the internet can become a target, with critical infrastructure being especially enticing for state-sponsored threat actors in today's geopolitical landscape. Recent cyberattacks against infrastructure serve as great reminders that, even in air-gapped systems, your organization's security posture depends largely on your employees. Settlement reached in T-Mobile data breaches! T-Mobile has agreed to a $31.5 million settlement with the FCC following significant data breaches between 2021 and 2023 affecting tens of millions of U.S. consumers, including a staggering 76.6 million customers in 2021 alone. As part of the settlement, T-Mobile will pay a $15.75 million civil penalty and invest an equal amount to enhance its cybersecurity measures over the next two years. This includes addressing security flaws and adopting advanced protections like zero trust frameworks and phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication. A staggering 2.9 billion records of personal information for people in the United States, the UK, and Canada have been leaked on a hacking forum. Records include sensitive data like names, social security numbers, and physical addresses. The source of the breach appears to be National Public Data, a company that compiles and sells personal data for background checks and investigations. It is very likely that some of your personal information has been compromised and may be leveraged by threat-actors. It’s critical to monitor your credit for any suspicious activity and remain vigilant against phishing attempts. Moving forward, we should assume our information is out there. This is why identity is the new perimeter and why every business should have or should be establishing an IAM program with the support of experts in the field. In March, we shared a story about GPT-4's ability to exploit known vulnerabilities with frightening ease. The same team of researchers is back with a groundbreaking demonstration: GPT-4 bots can autonomously hack previously unknown, real-world 'zero-day' vulnerabilities, achieving a 53% success rate.🛡️💻 🔍 How It Works: Utilizing a technique known as Hierarchical Planning with Task-Specific Agents (HPTSA), researchers coordinated multiple GPT-4 bots. Each bot handled specific tasks, managed by a central "planning agent," making the process incredibly efficient. 📈 Impressive Results: - Efficiency Boost: HPTSA method is 550% more efficient than using a single LLM. - Success Rate: Successfully hacked 8 out of 15 zero-day vulnerabilities tested. - Comparison: A single LLM managed only 3 out of 15. ⚠️ Concerns & Reassurances: While there's concern about potential misuse for malicious attacks, it's reassuring to know that in standard chatbot mode, GPT-4 cannot perform hacking tasks.
