Haleigh N. Mulholland and colleagues at the University of Minnesota shed light on how modular activity self-organizes in the immature cortex. Despite the brain's immaturity at birth, neural activity forms into predictable, columnar patterns, hinting at fascinating underlying mechanisms. Using calcium imaging and optogenetics, the team demonstrated how lateral inhibition and local excitation drive these patterns. Leveraging the Mightex #Polygon1000, they revealed: 1️⃣ Cortex activity naturally organizes into periodic patterns. 2️⃣ Characteristic frequencies of activity remain stable across trials. 3️⃣ Stimulating at these frequencies synchronizes neural responses. 4️⃣ Stimuli at non-characteristic frequencies produce intermediate activity patterns. These findings clarify the physiological underpinning of columnar cortical activity in immature animals. 👉 Read the full paper here:https://lnkd.in/gwa-Bt_m

Week 10 Highlight: Created a Focus Assist Device for Creative Electron, Inc., where my design was recognized as one of the Top 4 along with Marissa Renteria, Jonathon Gracia, and Stacy Pena. Thanks again to Kate MacArevey-Colello, KC Cadacio, and Devan M. for setting up this opportunity. Here’s what we were given: • Devise and prototype a mechanism enabling the mounting and focusing of a Mightex camera fitted with a Arducam lens. The camera will be focused while mounted to a Toshiba x-ray image intensifier. Here’s what the problem was: • It’s not currently possible to focus the lens on the camera while it is installed in the camera mount and image intensifier. Technicians must mount the camera, check the focus, then remove the camera, adjust the focus, then reinstall to check. This can require multiple iterations and several phases of attachment/detachment of the camera. Here’s what I did: • Created a 3D printed prototype using Autodesk Fusion 360, where a rotary dial would adjust the focus ring of the camera • Created a Bill of Materials listing all individual parts used • Prepared a presentation for Creative Electron staff where I covered the overview of my design, the assembly process, and CAD-generated images #RobotsAndLasers #Mightex #Arducam #Toshiba #Autodesk #Fusion360 #3DPrinting #Ultimaker #UltimakerS5 #Creality #Ender #AdditiveManufacturing #EngineeringTechnician #Engineering MiraCosta College Community Education & Workforce Development

🔔 Check out our new blog post 🔔 Using the Mightex #Polygon , Severin and colleagues recently revealed unexpected daily oscillations in neuronal membrane capacitance in excitatory neurons of the visual cortex and hippocampal dentate gyrus. This paper combines patch clamp electrophysiology with targeted optogenetics to interrogate integration of dendritic inputs, with implications for neuronal excitability and function throughout the day. 👉 Read more about their work here: https://lnkd.in/gK28-CuJ
