As 2024 races to a close, we are grateful for the opportunities to be part of networking, learning and development events throughout the year, like MineConnect’s Mini Mining Forum in Timmins. In early December, Isabelle Senecal, joined a group of panelists to discuss #hiringstrategies. Some of the insights shared:
- A multi-pronged approach to recruitment is key – there is no ONE solution
- The first step to building a team is retention – do you regularly employ the practice of a “Stay Interview”? We often wait until the Exit Interview to understand why someone is leaving; By then, it’s too late.
- A couple of jarring statistics: In 2023, roughly 1 in every 5 mining workers is 55 or older AND 700,000 skilled trades workers are expected to retire before 2028
- Diversity and inclusion practices are necessary to ensure the mining industry is an attractive career prospect for all
There are many more strategies to consider, such as internal mentorship programs, offering the flexibility many employees seek, and creating an efficient and seamless hiring, onboarding, and orientation process.
