Not everything is a nail! That's the subject of a #review paper four of my very recently graduated #PhDstudents and I wrote on #machinelearning #opportunities and #challenges in water resource recovery facilities (#wrrf). The paper's #highlights are: 1) ML has arrived in a wide diversity of wastewater applications 2) Simplicity must be pursued to ensure ML-interpretability and trust 3) Successful ML needs high quality (meta-)data, and bridge educational gaps 4) Hybrid (ML-mechanistic) models tap into both data scientist and engineer expertise You can read about it yourself at: https://lnkd.in/eYcmqcN3 This was a great collaborative effort that tapped in your joint expertise developed during your PhDs, Mostafa Khalil, Marcello Serrao, Jeffrey Sparks and Jean-David Therrien! modelEAU - Université Laval CentrEau - Water Management Research Centre

About us
modelEAU is the research team built around the Canada Research Chair on Water Quality Modelling that is held by Peter Vanrolleghem since February 2006. Ten graduate students, three postdocs and two research assistants carry out multifacetted studies in which models are the central ingredient. The research focus is mainly methodological, looking at data collection, data quality evaluation, development of new models and improved modelling approaches, model-based optimization and supporting software. Studies are applied to urban wastewater systems and tackle challenges such as nutrient (removal and recovery), fate of micropollutants and emissions of greenhouse gases, by developing and using mathematical models, automated monitoring stations, process control and pilot- and full-scale experiments

We happened to be at the City of Iqaluit in Nunavut, and could participate in the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (https://lnkd.in/gHrRzxkc). Quite a memorable moment for the three of us. Université Laval CentrEau - Water Management Research Centre

Congratulations to our colleague Jean-David Therrien on successfully defending his PhD! 🎉🎓 The thesis, titled “Traversing the Data Pipeline: Increasing the Utility of Data for WRRF and Public Health Decision-Making," includes several critical additions to modelEAU's work on the #DataPipeline of Water Resource Recovery Facilities (#WRRFs) and Wastewater-Based Epidemiology (#WBE). His work on the #pilEAUte plant will help pave the way for implementing online fault detection, fault-tolerant control, and #DigitalTwin functionality in our full-scale pilot plant. His systems approach to problem-solving led him to tackle problems in the realm of #DigitalWater, #PublicHealth, #DataScience and #MachineLearning. In each area, he always emphasized the importance of high-quality contextual data to increase trust and make sure that hard-won data can used safely and confidently! Many thanks to: - CentrEau - Water Management Research Centre, - Ottawa Hospital Research Institute - The European Commission - Public Health Agency of Canada | Agence de la santé publique du Canada, - Institut national de santé publique du Québec, - CIUSSS de la Capitale-Nationale, - Ministère de la santé et des services sociaux, - Thales, and - Ceto, who all made this work possible via their precious collaboration!
That’s all, folks! 🎩🐇 This Tuesday was a very special day—I successfully defended my PhD thesis, “Traversing the Data Pipeline: Increasing the Utility of Data for WRRF and Public Health Decision-Making,” before jury members Lina Belia, David CHAMPREDON, and Ingmar Nopens. It was also a joy to have Paul Lessard, my program director from my bachelor days, officiating the defense. In my thesis, I explored the #datapipeline — a term that my director, Peter Vanrolleghem, colleague Niels Nicolaï, and I helped popularize in the wastewater field with our 2020 review ( https://lnkd.in/ekCpZgAQ ) — of Water Resource Recovery Facilities (#WRRFs) and wastewater-based epidemiology (#WBE) The outcomes of my research include: ☑️ An open-source tool for metadata creation during time-series processing for WRRFs: metEAUdata (https://lnkd.in/ei6qpnKP). ☑️ The Public Health Environmental Surveillance Open Data Model (PHES-ODM): an open-source data model for the collection of data and metadata of wastewater-based surveillance programs. Co-developed with Doug Manuel and Mathew Thomson from the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and Sorin Sion from the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (EU-JRC), it is now adopted in many countries worldwide, including Canada's #PHAC and across the European Union (https://lnkd.in/eB7wYwjv). ☑️ A city-agnostic short-term forecasting model for COVID-19 public health metrics using modern deep learning methods. Working on these projects has been an absolute joy. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who helped make this thesis a reality, starting with my director, Peter Vanrolleghem, co-director and AI expert Patrick Dallaire, stellar collaborator and friend, Thomas Maere, and all of my modelEAU colleagues. Thank you also to the jury for their insightful feedback and the engaging rounds of questions, which will help me raise my vision above the details of my thesis and into more real-world applications. The thesis will be available for download after incorporating the insightful comments from the jury. I’ll keep you posted! I’m excited to see what is in store for the next steps of my water journey! 💧

Yesterday, modelEAU hosted its annual PhD Day, a day rich with insights and collaboration. The event included valuable sessions on navigating graduate studies and post-graduate opportunities, a technical session, and group discussions on our current research activities and strategies to improve teamwork. The day concluded with a social gathering, where we had the chance to unwind and connect over drinks. A special thank you to our guest speakers, Gamze KIRIM, Janelcy Alferes, and Statistics Canada | Statistique Canada, for their interesting contributions. We also want to thank the organizing committee, Coline, Daniel, and laleh, for their work in making this event a success. #modelEAU #TeamDay #Modelling #TeamWork #TeamDay #Québec #Fun CentrEau - Water Management Research Centre

Yesterday, Jeffrey Sparks, successfully defended his #PhD at Université Laval. His groundbreaking work on implementing (at full-scale, thanks HRSD!) advanced #process control using #digitaltwin technology, was critically assessed by a top-notch evaluation committee with Kris Villez, Leiv Rieger and Elena Torfs (people in the field know that Jeff was challenged during his 2-hour defense ;-). Supervisors Peter Vanrolleghem and Charles Bott completed this jury that tackled Jeff from all sides... No weak spot could be identified, not surprisingly! Stay tuned for the papers that will come out of this PhD, entitled "The intersection of industrial control, data-driven modelling, and Digital Twins at Water Resource Recovery Facilities: Achieving next-gen biological nutrient removal with balanced complexity". The PhD itself will be downloadable after it has been upgraded with the very insightful comments of the jury. We'll keep you posted! CentrEau - Water Management Research Centre

We’re proud to support modelEAU member Jean-David Therrien and alumni Maryam Tohidi and Gabrielle Ridyard, who will be running the Ottawa Marathon in two weeks with Team Water and Anxiety 🏃♂️💧. This group of dedicated water professionals and their friends is running to raise funds for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) 🏥, a humanitarian organization providing vital support to people in need in over 70 countries. Access to clean water is crucial, especially in conflict zones like Gaza, Yemen, the Congo, and South Sudan 🌍🚰. The team aims to match their training kilometers with dollars raised—approximately 2000 km by race day 🏅. Join us in supporting this important cause. Every contribution makes a significant impact. Thank you for your generosity! 🙏 #OttawaMarathon #TeamWaterAndAnxiety #MédecinsSansFrontières #Fundraising #CleanWater #WASH #HumanitarianAid #RunningCommunity #modelEAU
