We were honured to support Indspire's National Gathering in Winnipeg, MB, last week! Linda Isaac, Nelson's National Director of Education for Reconciliation, Equity and Inclusion, along with Joe Murphy and John Estabillo had inspiring conversations about Indigenous education with leading voices, including: - Elder Winston Wuttunee, a valued member of Nelson’s Indigenous Leadership Circle and Indspire’s Elder - Niigaan Sinclair held workshop sessions on Climbing the Mountain and held a signing for his new book, Wînipêk - Patrick Hunter, a two-spirit Ojibway artist and keynote discussing creating art that makes people feel good and inspires confidence in young Indigenous artists - Carolyn Roberts, Assistant Professor at UBC and workshop speaker addressing Re-Storying Education - Charlene Smoke, Alderville First Nation, a recipient of the Ingenious Educator Award from Indspire - And, many more! This morning, we were saddened to hear of the passing of the Honourable Murray Sinclair. His leadership and incredible work have brought to light how taking action together can change the relationship between Canada and Indigenous people. At Nelson, we have learned so much from him and will continue to share his legacy with the education community. Sending our prayers to the Sinclair family and to Indigenous communities across Canada.
