Work has begun on the USDA's Partnership for Climate Smart Commodity project, which is being spearheaded by The International Fresh Produce Association (IFPA). OSF's Joel Carter and Measure to Improve's Gabe were at our Washington state orchards to take baseline soil samples for the project. These soil sampling tests will allow us to track and understand the effects of various climate-smart agriculture practices over time. #usda #ifpa #internationalfreshproduceassociation #usda #measuretoimprove #climatesmart #arcticapples #vibrantfuture Max Teplitski Tamara Muruetagoiena

About us
Okanagan Specialty Fruits (OSF) began as a small, dynamic agricultural biotechnology company based in Summerland, British Columbia, Canada. Founded in 1996, OSF specializes in developing tree fruit varieties with novel attributes that benefit fruit producers and consumers alike. OSF is one of the first firms to pursue the use of biotechnology to deliver product innovations to the tree fruit industry. Our Leadership OSF is led by apple and cherry grower Neal Carter. Through his work across the globe as a bioresource engineer, Neal became convinced of the opportunities offered by biotechnology. OSF’s world-class science team works collaboratively with many of the world’s leading tree fruit research institutions. Our Vision OSF will change the way people think about and experience produce; our creative product development and commercialization expertise will open the door to novel, exciting, specialized foods that support the evolving healthy diet choices of today’s consumer. Our Mission To develop safe, high-quality tree fruit cultivars that provide growers, processors, wholesalers, retailers, foodservice and consumers with improvements in quality and productivity; and to successfully market and commercialize these products. A revolutionary innovation: Arctic® apples OSF’s flagship project is the development and commercialization of nonbrowning Arctic® apples. Arctic® apples’ nonbrowning trait offers valuable benefits for all members of the apple supply chain, from growers to consumers. OSF holds a worldwide license on the ability to regulate the expression of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) genes to control enzymatic browning in tree fruits, and we are patent holders of the technology that enables us to do so. By reducing the expression of PPO, OSF is developing tree fruits with inhibited enzymatic browning.

🌱 How are new breeding methods, like GM and NGTs, benefiting consumers? In this week’s #PlantasticDiscoveries, we explore how these innovations are improving the produce we enjoy! 🥔 Visual imperfections, such as browning, bitterness in leafy greens, or short shelf life, can deter consumers from buying or wasting perfectly good produce. By addressing these issues, innovative breeding techniques are creating fruits and vegetables that are more durable, tastier and nutritious. 🍎 GM fruit and vegetables, like Arctic Apples and Innate potatoes, help reduce browning and waste while enhancing quality. Purple tomatoes bring antioxidants into the spotlight with their vibrant colour and health benefits. 🥗 NGTs are making fresh greens like GreenVenus lettuce last longer and taste better. They’re also enriching crops like the GABBA tomato with added nutritional value. 🧬 Thanks to these advancements, we’re seeing more sustainable, appealing, and nutritious options on the market in some countries.
