🚨 NEW WHITE PAPER ALERT 🚨 “Personalized plantar temperature monitoring for diabetic foot ulcer risk reduction” Maryam Hajizadeh Emily Bray Evan Minty 🦶 BACKGROUND Remote plantar temperature monitoring is an evidence-based strategy for identifying plantar “hot spots” (inflammation). Early detection enables treating pre-ulcerative wounds before they escalate to more serious complications (ulcer, infection, amputation). 🌡️ CLINICAL GAP Current clinical guidelines offer a single population threshold for identifying a temperature trend of concern: left/right asymmetries >2.2°C. However, some common co-morbidities (think peripheral arterial disease) also cause limb temperature asymmetries. These individuals may be at risk of under/over alerting with current temperature monitoring protocols. 📈 NEW DEVELOPMENT The Orpyx® Sensory Insole program now features a “baseline temperature asymmetry” algorithm. The algorithm identifies users with an underlying baseline temperature asymmetry, and adjusts the thresholds to monitor for deviations from this personal baseline. 🩺 BROADER IMPACT Any screening tool must balance the risk of not offering treatment to people who would develop an ulcer (“false negative” alert) against treating people who would not develop an ulcer (“false positive” alert). Personalized medicine aims to narrow this gap by accounting for inter-individual variations in disease progression. 💙 The most meaningful clinical engagements start with the most personalized data.
