Ottawa was among the nominees for the prestigious Music City of the Year award at the 2024 Live Music Industry Awards! Congratulations to this year's winner, the City of London 🏆 __ Ottawa était parmi les nominés aux Live Music Industry Awards pour le prestigieux prix de la Ville musicale de l'année ! Félicitations au lauréat de cette année, la ville de London 🏆
Get to know our Music City of the Year nominees for 2024; the cities making great strides in creating communities where artists and live music can thrive--through policy, programming, funding, and much more. CITY OF OTTAWA: In 2023-24, Ottawa demonstrated its commitment to the music industry by: substantially boosting its direct financial investment, beginning its development of a Nightlife Economy Action Plan, and investing in 20 live family-friendly outdoor performances in collaboration with BIAs. Thanks to these collaborative initiatives, BIAs like Sparks Street have expanded their live music performances in 2024. Renowned festivals consistently attract top-tier talent and are continuing to position Ottawa as a premier music destination. CITY OF OSHAWA: Creating a new music festival Convergence from the ground up, Oshawa Tourism, the City of Oshawa, and Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce brought in over 15,000. This event highlighted local artists on the emerging stage, brought in Canadian touring acts for the main stage, and worked with local businesses to put a spotlight on the music, arts, and culture scene in the Oshawa region, including the numerous venues that exist within the downtown core. CITY OF KINGSTON: Anchored by a thriving live music scene, supported by its new Music Strategy and Music Office, Kingston's commitment to nurturing musical talent is evident in initiatives like Slaight Music Video Program, Youth Open Mics, Merch Markets, and Joe Chithalen Musical Instrument Lending Library. Artists find professional development and enriching experiences at all levels. With over 20+ dedicated music venues and an electric mix of festivals including Spring Reverb and Skeleton Park Arts Festival, Kingston's buzzes with live music year-round! CITY OF LONDON, WINNER: Major projects took place in 2023 that make London a music leader including Folk Music Ontario 2023, the inaugural VENUExVENUE, and the London City of Music Concert Series. 2023 also saw the first edition of the City of Music Conference, gathering civic leaders together to engage about policy development practices that will help shape Canadian communities. The team was fortunate to host the 2024 UNESCO Cities of Music Cluster–the first of its kind in Canadam, attracting music policy leaders from around the globe.
