Ending Global Poverty Begins with Women's Rights #TheFutureIsEqual

About us

Oxfam Canada works with partner organizations in developing countries; tackling the root causes of poverty and inequity and helping people to create self-reliant and sustainable communities. Oxfam’s vision is a just world without poverty. We envision a world in which people can influence decisions which affect their lives, enjoy their rights, and assume their responsibilities as full citizens of a world in which all human beings are valued and treated equally. Oxfam Canada’s mission is to build lasting solutions to poverty and injustice with a focus on improving the lives and promoting the rights of women and girls. Working with Canadians, our partners and allies around the world, we mobilize people and resources to change policies, practices, attitudes and behaviours that create inequality and human suffering. Oxfam is committed to strengthening a global movement in support of human rights and gender justice on a healthy planet.

  • On this National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, we remember. On December 6, 1989, 14 women were killed at École Polytechnique in Montreal simply because they were women. Their names remain a powerful reminder of the violence rooted in misogyny. 🌹 Geneviève Bergeron 🌹 Hélène Colgan 🌹 Nathalie Croteau 🌹 Barbara Daigneault 🌹 Anne-Marie Edward 🌹 Maud Haviernick 🌹 Maryse Laganière 🌹 Maryse Leclair 🌹 Anne-Marie Lemay 🌹 Sonia Pelletier 🌹 Michèle Richard 🌹 Annie St-Arneault 🌹 Annie Turcotte 🌹 Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz Thirty-five years later, we honour their memory by continuing to advocate for a world free from gender-based violence. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to fight for a world where women, girls, 2SLGBTQ+ and non-binary people can live free from violence. Let’s stand together against violence and call for a future of justice, equity, and peace. #16DaysofActivism #December6 #GenderJustice #EndViolenceAgainstWomen

  • 🤯 DYK? 3.8 million Canadians live in poverty, struggling with soaring housing and grocery costs. 💰 It’s high time to build a fair tax system where the wealthiest pay their fair share.  📈 Bold tax reforms - like windfall and monopoly profit taxes - could raise over $58 billion to tackle inequality and fund a just energy transition.  Our friends Canadians For Tax Fairness published a report where you can learn how billions in untaxed profits are fuelling inequality and how #TaxJustice can fix it. Read it below! https://lnkd.in/gdAE6qJg

  • 🧡 Happy #16DaysofActivism! 16 Days is an international campaign that raises awareness about gender-based violence and runs from November 25 (International Day Against Violence Against Women) to December 10 (International Human Rights Day). 🙌 To get started, our very own Shamminaz Polen writes about the importance of breaking the silence on gender-based violence and her visit to the Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada-funded project #We-Talk in Jamaica. https://lnkd.in/eMhVdAaE

Last night, we celebrated the launch of the 2024 State of World Population report together with Parliamentarians and Senators, Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and CAPPD. It has been 30 years since the Cairo International Conference on Population and Development, a pivotal moment that shifted global focus towards women's rights, development, and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).   Despite progress, the past decade has witnessed alarming rollbacks in women's rights worldwide, including in Canada. Oxfam Canada’s Alexandra Wilson talked about some of the efforts of Oxfam Canada’s Her Future, Her Choice project in Malawi to make improvements to the restrictive abortion laws and the devastating outcomes that women face when fundamental health care is made illegal. She emphasized the devastating consequences of denying women access to essential healthcare, underscoring the urgent need for policy changes and increased support for women's rights. Her Future, Her Choice is a project funded by Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada.

  • 🙅♀️ PSA: Your colleagues don't need a scented candle as a holiday gift. Let’s be real. Linda doesn’t need another hot chocolate kit. Mike definitely doesn’t need another desk organizer he’ll never use. But a gift that helps people in vulnerable communities thrive? Now we're talking. ✨ 💖 Oxfam Unwrapped symbolic gifts are great for workplace gifting. Think cash vouchers, clean water kits, or even school supplies for communities in need. ✏️ 🌍 Head over to Oxfam Unwrapped and make your gifts this year actually matter. Because fighting inequality > awkward Secret Santa swaps. 💚 https://lnkd.in/e-TAKyrd
