Eliza Babarczy co-founded Itza Wood in Guatemala’s Peten Jungle, inspired by two powerful goals: supporting the Jungle School her parents founded in 1999 and creating sustainable jobs for its graduates. Today, her vision thrives as 50 skilled artisans craft stunning, sustainable wood homewares right in the heart of the jungle. For Eliza, success isn’t just measured in numbers—it’s in the social and environmental impact of the work, the joy of spotting their handcrafted spoons on TV, and the stories of team members achieving milestones like buying a motorcycle or sending a sibling to school. This is where makers make—with heart, resilience, and a deep respect for the land and its people.✨ What inspires you to create? Learn more about Itza Wood here: https://hubs.li/Q02_Cd_P0

Work life balance? You'll find it by the mill by the sea 🧵 For South Africa's Mungo, some things are more important than chasing profits. “I understand value and wealth, but it needs to be proportional to what you as a human being actually need to be happy. I’d rather go for a surf than sit around making more money. Ultimately, what we’re doing with Mungo is trying to build a richer life.” Like the way Dax Holding thinks? Investor Sentiment has Shifted Towards Sustainable Futures. Just off of a fantastic #IMPACTWEEK by Norrsken in Barcelona (more on this soon). Over the past few months, I’ve had the opportunity to meet with investors across North America, Europe, and Africa. I’ve been struck by a renewed (though cautious) sense of optimism when speaking with more traditional investors, looking at building for the future. Two things stood out to me. First, more “traditional” investors see sustainability as a way of future-proofing their investments. In Africa investments in climate-tech and sustainability remain strong, in Europe regulatory developments like the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) are driving greater transparency in companies’ sustainability targets. This creates a unique space for building businesses with outsized ambitions for market disruption. Second, fintech investors are increasingly looking to marketplaces for embedded finance as a strong alternative finance angle, particularly as the numbers show that women are being left further behind with current banking and even micro-finance services. You see good examples of marketplaces in Africa and beyond (i.e. Wasoko), that started with simple distribution for suppliers, and ended up bundling financial products otherwise inaccessible to their user base. For us at #PBP, it’s proven to be a critical service as a better business partner to our independent makers, beyond just placing their products with retailers or helping them sell online. It makes for a greater value proposition for customers and users, and a more solid growth avenue for the business overall. Looking ahead, I feel confident that the major forces driving the trend toward a more sustainable and inclusive economy is one which serves a global scale & therefore has the ability to grow all businesses, and yet will require partners that are similarly looking long term. Investors and founders focused on the long-term, how do you see things trending? And where do you see the intersection of tech and sustainability heading?

When consumers spend time on the Hawkins New York website, they often find themselves thinking “I want to buy that…and that…and that…and that.”🛍️ The upstate retailer applies a sharp curatorial eye to every product it carries, culminating in a selection that feels both personal and accessible. Says the team at Hawkins, “Our aim has always been to provide elevated basics that feel good, look good, and help our community make home their own rather than rely on someone else to tell them how to style their space.” Read the full interview with Hawkins New York from the latest issue of Crafted here: https://lnkd.in/gVF9isBB #ModernLiving #NorthAmericanRetail #UpstateNewYork #SustainableDropship #PoweredbyPeople #HawkinsNewYork #HolidayDecor

If Powered by People ever ventures into the wine world, our first partner would be Ami-Ami – a brand as committed to sustainability as we are. Founded by Healdsburg-based friends Ross Dawkins and Woody Hambrecht, Ami-Ami is doing things differently in a couple of ways. 1) They work with vineyards in the Languedoc region of France that have received the French wine industry's HVE seal of sustainability. 2) Ami-Ami said no to glass bottles and yes to boxes. "when it came to bottling, the carbon impact of moving glass across oceans caught out attenttion," says Dawkins and Hambrecht. Why does this matter? Boxed wine has 50% less carbon footprint than bottled wine. And it helps reduce waste – because let’s face it, not every bottle gets finished. If you joined us at Shoppe Object in New York this past August, you might’ve tasted Ami-Ami at our summer soirée. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/g6u8We9U

When Domaine Chandon set out to reimagine their Napa Valley estate, they didn’t just redefine a tasting experience—they celebrated craftsmanship. Collaborating with Powered by People, Chandon brought together a community of makers whose artistry mirrors the craft of winemaking. From AndJacob’s marble trays, cut to reflect the estate’s elegant forms, to L’Impatience’s nesting dishes inspired by California’s natural beauty, every detail is intentional, every piece tells a story. Together, we elevate Chandon’s ethos: modern luxury rooted in tradition, celebrated through the hands of artisans.
