Don’t expect Costco to be any less busy. New federal policies will lead to a net population decline for the first time in Canadian history. Since my UDI presentation last week I have had lots of requests to post a couple of my slides, particularly those pertaining to the section I called “are we setting up future generations for success”. For this I compared the situation navigated by Canada’s 20 to 44 population in 1986 (which was loosely the Post War Boom generation) to that being faced by the 20 to 44 population today (the Millennials). The first chart shows that average individual income for the 20 to 44 population in Canada in 1986 was $23,511 (1986 Census data, so this was 1985 reported incomes). By 2021 average individual incomes for the 20 to 44 population had increased by 103% to $47,958 (current dollars, as reported on the Census, so 2020 income). Over the same period Census data show that average rents paid increased by 163% from just over $5,500 to more than $14,500 per annum. While incomes doubled, the cost of renting a home increased by 2.64 times. More significant differentials were seen in average ownership costs (a threefold increase), average post secondary tuition costs (more than a sixfold increase) and average home values (more than a sevenfold increase). While the incomes versus cost situations experienced by each of the Boom and Millennial generations differed significantly, the second chart shows a similar differential for the fiscal situation faced by each generation. In 1986 net federal debt was in the range of $247 billion dollars (again in 1986 dollars). Looking at this through the lens of the base amount of federal debt the bulk of the working aged population (the Boomers in 1986) would need to carry forward, this converted to roughly $23,000 of net federal debt per 20 to 44 year old. With estimated net federal debt now in the range of $1.4 trillion, the debt liability for 2024’s 20 to 44 population is now almost $100,000 per person, or 4.3 times larger than that experienced by the Post War Boomers in 1986.
