Huge thanks to EVERYONE that came out to our inaugural Hockey Heals Charity Tournament! We raised over $1500 for Boots on the Ground - a 24/7 peer support line for veterans & first responders. It was a great day of community, food, raffle prizes, virtual golf, and of course - hockey! We had 4 teams, 11 sponsors, and over 50 community members. Huge thanks to our corporate sponsors for helping make this happen, especially IPHT President Terry Wark and the International Police Hockey Tournament. A milestone moment for Simcoe Addiction and Mental Health! Last week SAMH celebrated the ribbon cutting for our expansion with the support of our local leaders. We were honoured to welcome Mayor Lynn Dollin, Deputy Mayor Kenneth Fowler, and Ward 2 Councillor Grace Constantine to our facility to mark this exciting milestone. Their presence emphasizes the importance of coming together as a community to support mental health and addiction recovery. This expansion will allow us to serve even more individuals in need, providing hope, healing, and a path forward. Some spooky facts about Halloween & Mental health 🎃👇 Social pressure of substance use: Halloween parties can often involve a lot of alcohol/substance use, which can be challenging for people in recovery. Studies show that social events, especially around holidays, can increase the risk of relapse for those recovering from substance use disorders. Haunted houses and anxiety/trauma: For some these can trigger anxiety, PTSD, or panic attacks, especially for those with trauma-related disorders. Over-the-top haunted houses or horror movies can be uncomfortable or even distressing. Masks & social anxiety: Halloween masks and costumes can increase feelings of social anxiety or discomfort. This is especially relevant for those who struggle with social anxiety or have experienced trauma. Remember: Not all heroes wear masks—some take them off! This Halloween, be gentle with yourself if social events feel overwhelming. You can celebrate in ways that honour your mental health. Let’s make this a safe, inclusive holiday for all.
