First Nations and Métis health research, training, and knowledge mobilization led by Métis and First Nations people.

About us

We facilitate First Nations and Métis health research, training, and knowledge mobilization that is grounded in community and led by Métis and First Nations people. Our networks are made up of researchers, community organizations, community members, and graduate students throughout Saskatchewan working in First Nations and Métis health and wellness. SK-NEIHR is led by Métis, First Nations and allied researchers, in partnership with Métis Nation-Saskatchewan, FSIN, and other community partners. Our work is guided by the foundational beliefs that Saskatchewan First Nations and Métis people are best situated to lead research, training and knowledge mobilization involving our communities, that the SK-NEIHR belongs to Métis and First Nations Peoples in Saskatchewan, and that it can grow and evolve based on community-identified needs. We rely on the guidance of our community partners, Elders, knowledge keepers, and other experts for this work. We are funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research under their National Network Environments for Indigenous Health Research (NEIHR) initiative.

Her article, "CPR RACISM: A Guide for Health Care Providers to Address Racism in Health Care", addresses racism in health care through her resource CPR RACISM: "CPR RACISM will encourage and support a speak-up culture and will reinforce the delivery of safe, competent, ethical and trauma-informed nursing care for all Canadians" (Dr. Holly Graham). • Last week the SK-NEIHR was fortunate to connect with Dr. Chelsea Gabel, Scientific Director of CIHR Institute of Indigenous Peoples’ Health, at the University of Saskatchewan in the Good Medicine People space. The conversation and knowledge exchange were inspired and illuminating. The future looks bright and we are excited for the advancements that are still to come in the arena of Indigenous Peoples' health. www.skneihr.ca

  • Dear friends, It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Gilbert Kewistep, a man from whom so many of us have learned over the years. Gilbert was a kind, gentle, and humble soul – a source of strength and inspiration for all of us. His wisdom, generosity, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed. Gilbert was a knowledge keeper on our Saskatchewan NEIHR network and in the Saskatchewan Indigenous Mentorship Network before that. He guided us as a Sacred Pipe Carrier and a member of the Saskatchewan First Nations and Métis Organ Donation and Transplantation Think Tank. Hailing from the Saulteaux/Nakaway Linguistic group in central Saskatchewan and originally from the Yellowquill First Nation, Gilbert lived in Saskatoon and contributed greatly to the life of the community. He was the proud father of four daughters and five sons, and a loving grandfather and great-grandfather to many. He was a cherished Elder, a dedicated social worker, and a beloved professor at First Nations University. As a survivor of both the Residential School System and the Sixties Scoop, he devoted his life to helping others heal from trauma with compassion and wisdom. His impact was profound, reaching far beyond Saskatoon and Saskatchewan. Let us honour Gilbert’s memory by embracing the values of truth and reconciliation that he held dear, and by supporting each other. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. We are sharing a few videos so we can still hear Gilbert’s wise words. We are forever grateful for the legacy you have left us.
