Today’s Budget 2025 announcement recognized the significant economic uncertainty facing British Columbia — and we appreciate the need for the Province to respond accordingly. Small Housing had hoped to see more targeted investments to support the homebuilding industry itself, such as strengthening the domestic supply chain for essential materials like lumber. Investments that bolster local processing capacity would not only support B.C.’s forestry sector and related sectors like offsite manufacturing, but could also reduce the cost pressures facing homebuilders and help accelerate the delivery of much-needed housing across the province. In times of uncertainty, the importance of a stable and resilient homebuilding sector cannot be overstated. Homes are not just critical infrastructure — they are the foundation of thriving, resilient communities. We will continue to advocate for policies and investments that enable faster, more affordable delivery of gentle density housing, and we look forward to working with all levels of government to strengthen the supply chain, modernize financing tools, and streamline approvals to help B.C. builders deliver the housing we urgently need. #bcpoli #policy #news #announcements #housing #budget2025

Exciting times at Small Housing as we strengthen our ties with mddl to form Canada's largest advocacy and industry support group dedicated to advancing gentle density homes! 🏘️
🚨 Big news for missing middle housing in Canada! 🚨 Across the country, nearly 8 million homes—53% of our national housing stock—are single-family dwellings. But these homes aren’t the problem; they’re part of the solution. In cities like Vancouver, 65,000 mortgage-free homes could be leveraged for gentle density, helping to unlock new housing supply while giving homeowners a financial boost. That’s why Small Housing and mddl are teaming up to accelerate missing middle housing solutions nationwide! We've signed a Letter of Intent with mddl, Alberta’s leading force in scalable, simplified, and sustainable middle housing solutions. Together, we’re forming the largest advocacy and industry support group for missing middle housing in Canada—focused on advocacy, industry education, homeowner-developer support, and making gentle density projects easier to finance, approve, and build. 💬 “Canada needs more ground-oriented homes that families can afford,” says Dan Winer, Executive Lead at Small Housing. “Collaborating with mddl allows us to scale our impact and help municipalities unlock gentle density solutions more effectively.” 💬 “By bringing our expertise together, we can kickstart housing projects and spark innovative ideas in communities from coast to coast,” adds Darlene J. Jehn, President & Co-Founder of mddl. 💬 “This partnership is a powerful example of how the non-profit and private sectors can work together to drive real change,” says Alkarim Devani, CEO & Co-Founder of mddl. Together, we’re tackling restrictive policies, modernizing financing options, and ensuring small-scale multi-unit housing is practical, efficient, and attainable. This is an exciting development, and we can't wait to share some of the work that we've got planned! Let’s reshape the landscape for missing middle housing—because a better housing future starts here. I've been a fan of the work of Darlene J. and Alkarim Devani since their initial work on the Kelowna fast track program. We need a lot of middle housing... hundreds of thousands of ground-oriented homes for families across Canada. The more we collaborate, share knowledge and resources, the faster we can accelerate housing solutions, training, government advocacy, and so on. mddl has been doing great work rolling out a myriad of programs to help enable gentle density. Their industry expertise combined with the policy and advocacy work of Small Housing is a no-brainer when it comes to further accelerating missing middle housing for all. Stay tuned - lots of big things to come! #missingmiddle #housingaffordability #newhomes #gentledensity
