Student Energy at UofC

Really excited to be working with this stellar group and the individuals who comprise Student Energy at UofC. It is not the 7.2 kW of energy and resulting energy from these two systems that is so exciting but rather the individuals that have been behind this work and the anticipation of what they will achieve in their careers. Solar PV ☀️ + Youth 💪 = Impactful Community Projects 👷 Although the above equation isn't mathematically correct, it is exactly what happened at our Student Energy Chapter! Throughout 2023, our project team has worked closely with the Siksika Nation to envision and develop a project that carries a strong community impact, and helps the reserve introduce solar power to their energy mix, while reducing electricity costs (and selling back to the grid!!). 💡 This pilot project, which is a winner of the ATCO Community Energy Fund and is part of the Student Energy Guided Projects program, will see the installation of a 7.2 kW solar PV system this March, and power 2 housing units on reserve. 🏠 This milestone is a result of months of collaboration with the Siksika Housing team, our contractor SkyFire Energy Inc, and our coaches/mentors at Student Energy.⚡️ To learn more about the project: https://lnkd.in/gvq79mQc https://lnkd.in/gUrn4uY3

'Leading the Charge: A Vision for Alberta's Electricity Future' was co-created by the largest and most diverse coalition Alberta's electricity sector has ever seen. Participants ranged from groups you'd expect (government, electricity sector representatives, industry,) but also included less frequently heard voices - Indigenous Rights and Title holders, people with living in energy poverty, as well as next-generation leaders, whose futures will depend on the electricity system we're modernizing now. As part of Alberta’s Electricity Future coalition, our Student Energy chapter is a proud contributor to Leading the Charge: A Vision for Alberta’s Electricity Future. Alberta’s Electricity Future (AEF) is an initiative of the Energy Futures Lab that brings together electricity leaders and users, innovators and changemakers to ensure that our electricity system is set to power Alberta’s prosperity in the decades to come. Being part of AEF, our chapter is working closely with traditional electricity voices such as industry and government, as well as historically underrepresented groups such as Indigenous Rights and Title holders, rural constituents, people struggling with energy poverty, and the organizers from Energy Futures Lab. Together, we are identifying and converging on the next steps needed to enable greater customer choice and flexibility while maintaining the safety and reliability of the electricity system as it grows and expands to meet the needs of a prosperous, net-zero economy for Alberta. Without compromising on the values and principles that have made our province what it is today. Our Chapter acted as a representative for the youth, delegating students from Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary and UCalgary Faculty of Science to contribute to the development and enhancement of the vision. Thank you Student Energy at UofC and Calgary Indigenous STEAM Students' Association (CISSA) for the invitation to share ideas about our net-zero goals and the chance to meet amazing people last weekend. It was a great pleasure to share a space with everyone, particularly with Kareem Youssef Sara Hastings-Simon and Jake Bainbridge. It gives me a lot of hope seeing students in Calgary taking the lead to have this discussions and setting the tone when it comes to the sustainable futures we want to build. I look forward to keep working towards a more just and sustainable world, and finding others who share this vision.
