In this episode of Infill Development in Edmonton Association (IDEA), we participated in a discussion about the challenges and opportunities of building missing middle housing across Alberta. Studio North’s Matthew Kennedy shared insights from his work in mountain communities, highlighting how lessons learned can be applied throughout the province. He explores the process behind building the Aster, a 33-Dwelling affordable housing project in Banff, showcasing it as an example of achieving a balance between design excellence and affordability while addressing the specific needs of the local community. Matt also highlights the challenges of sourcing skilled labour for such initiatives and considers the broader implications for communities like the Town of Jasper as it undertakes rebuilding efforts following the recent devastating fire.

I am ecstatic to share the latest In Development episode with Infill Development in Edmonton Association (IDEA) we recorded with Matthew Kennedy, the Principal of Studio North! Matt shares his story behind the development of the Aster, a 33 dwelling unit multi-family in the heart of downtown Banff that provides affordable, for-purchase housing for eligible Banff residents. We talked about construction difficulties in remote towns, how hard it was to source out labourers, and what this means for places like the Town of Jasper as it begins to rebuild after the recent devastating fire. Matt and his team at Studio North just wrapped up filming the Aster documentary before we spoke, and I can't wait to watch it. Here is a sneak peek teaser of the documentary: https://lnkd.in/g6YY-m3h Huge thanks to Sean Sedgwick, Allison Rosland, Brendan Stephen Kane for co-hosting and technical support!

We believe that a home is far more than just a structure; it is a living, breathing vessel that nurtures the lives and relationships within it. A home should serve you and your loved ones, offering a space that fosters curiosity, wellness, and growth. It is a stage for life’s stories, where cherished memories unfold and lasting connections are built. Designed to age gracefully alongside its inhabitants, a well-crafted home becomes a part of your life’s journey, enriching your experiences and supporting the important relationships that define it. In every project, we see the transformative power of thoughtful design and the lasting impact it has on our clients’ lives. Our approach centers on creating spaces that not only reflect the unique values, interests, and passions of each client but also tell their family’s story. We are passionate about ensuring that the homes we create are more than just visually striking—they are designed to promote wellness and enhance the quality of living. Every detail, from layout to materials, contributes to a harmonious environment where well-being and beauty coexist. Rooted in a strong connection to place, our designs go beyond aesthetics. We craft spaces that resonate with the local culture, history, and landscape, blending seamlessly into their surroundings. By personalizing each design, we create homes that are not only a reflection of the client’s vision but also deeply connected to the community and environment they inhabit. This holistic approach results in homes that are meaningful, enduring, and life-enhancing. 🎙 Mark Erickson and Damon Hayes Couture 📽 Brendan Stephen Kane 📷 Hayden Pattullo 🏗 Matthew Kennedy #design #calgaryhomes #customhomes

Drawing inspiration from the clients’ curated collection of classic design pieces, such as the Eames Hang-It-All and the Artek Aalto chair, Saturation Renovation incorporates the bold and vibrant primary colours typical of mid-century modern furniture. Rather than creating a neutral background for these iconic pieces, vibrant colours enhance and reflect their distinctive character, aligning the playful design with the clients’ aesthetic identity. At the heart of the home, a large monochromatic island serves as a bold centrepiece. With its moulded sink and colour-matched tap, the island integrates with the clients’ existing furniture, as though it is its own piece to be added to the collection. Concrete terrazzo tiling on the floor and backsplash offers visual relief and connects the space to the entryway and powder room, where the same tile is used. 📐 Holly Mills #design #architecture #calgaryhomes

Saturation Renovation embraces a playful yet sophisticated design approach, integrating vibrant colours and patterns with refined elegance. The use of bold hues and monochromatic forms brings dynamic energy to the home, while recurring features like terrazzo tile and metal elements create a cohesive flow across spaces. Designed to accommodate a growing family, Saturation Renovation optimizes space and strategically uses colour and surface treatments to create illusions of height and openness. The entry hall features elegant millwork hidden under the stairs for laundry and cleaning supplies, while a floor-to-ceiling mirror and monochromatic wall enhance the sense of vertical space. Similarly, the powder room uses mirrors to create an expansive visual effect within the minimally sized room. 📐 Holly Mills #design #architecture #calgaryhomes
