Thordon Bearings had the pleasure of meeting with Dr. Christos Papadopoulos and PhD Candidate Mr. George Rossopoulos at the School of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering/NTUA in Athens. Standing alongside the Bruker UMT-3SYS tribometer, we discussed the research and testing conducted for the technical paper, "Experimental Characterization of the Tribological and Acoustic Performance of Different Stern-Tube Bearing Materials," presented at the 49th Leeds-Lyon Symposium on Tribology in September 2024. Thordon Bearings has delivered COMPAC water-lubricated propeller shaft and SXL rudder bearings to replace oil- and grease- lubricated bearings onboard McKeil Marine Limited's bulk carrier Northern Venture as part of a major refurbishment project. McKeil Marine is a returning customer for Thordon Bearings. The world’s first Thordon water-lubricated propeller shaft bearing was installed on a Great Lakes tug owned by McKeil Marine in the late 1970s. Following this conversion, many other Great Lakes operating vessels converted to Thordon, helping to raise the profile of the Burlington, Ontario-headquartered company across the global shipping industry. Thordon Bearings has reduced the excessive water leakage, that was resulting in costly downtime for Manitoba Hydro’s Limestone Generating Station, with our SXL shaft seals running for more than three years without the need for replacement. In an early 2021 proof-of-concept installation, one of the facility’s 133MW turbines had its carbon graphite shaft seal segments upgraded to SXL shaft seal segments.
