Why Authenticity is Overhyped and Underperforming "Authentic" is the top word of 2023, according to America's oldest dictionary, Merriam-Webster. The dictionary reported a "substantial increase" in online searches for it this year. Not surprising in a year dominated by artificial intelligence, deepfakes, and disingenuity. However, a number of years ago, I delivered a TEDx talk titled "The Importance of Being Inauthentic." This talk has proven to capture its own zeitgeist, with many people contacting me over the years to express how the ideas in it changed their lives for the better. Recently, I was interviewed by success coach Brad Sugars about my reasoning for that talk, and he too agreed with my cultural take and philosophy on "authenticity."
