Six years ago today, I started Grant while living in my sister’s basement (with ZERO help from the two in this video) post-divorce because I genuinely, deeply, madly loved brand design. Still do. The path to this discovery was, however, all over the place: - Young me drew constantly, thought I’d be a fashion designer but didn’t know graphic design existed. - Started side hustles in high school, won an entrepreneurship award, obsessed with grades. - Went to UofC for Business. Partied. - Failed out in 1.5 years with a 1.9 GPA. - *Cue identity crisis* - Worked at Lush and loved it. - Managed at Lush and loved it more. - Traveled to 3 countries, worked at Perfect Potion as a temp, loved it, and became a manager. - Turned the least profitable store into the most profitable in Australia and Japan. Confidence regained (ish). - Got into aromatherapy. - Back to Canada, went back to school at MRU. - Launched a natural bath product after testing it at a farmer’s market. - Took an Entr class, realized I loved it, and switched to Business Degree. - Thrived at MRU. - Joined a robotics startup after a class presentation, worked in marketing. - Designed 1st packaging at robotics job with no experience. Lightbulb moment: *I think I like design*. - Pitched business at the MRU Launchpad Competition, won $10K. - Hired a branding agency with winnings, found out that was a thing. - Taught myself graphic design, landed my first client, and left robotics and bath products behind. - Got a desk at a coworking space. I'm a Designer now. - Partnered with a super talented Designer to build a cool agency, learned the business of design. - Went solo and started Grant. Thought it would take a while to build. It did not. - Built a team equally obsessed with growth and improvement. - Stayed busy with referrals. Grew, but not too fast. - Sponsored the Launchpad competition repeatedly—full circle moment. - Learned 1 million more lessons. - Had a baby, navigated a pretty non-existent maternity leave with an uber supportive team. - Turned 6 years old as an agency with a 6-person team in what was once my “dream” office. - Realized this is just the beginning. It’s such a privilege to look back and see how all of these zigs and zags actually were necessary contributors to NOW. We’ll keep working our patooties off, and I genuinely can’t wait to see what this list looks like at year 10. Cheers to the hardest working team this town has ever seen *hat tip*: Teagan, Madison, Rikki, Sarah, Jayden. --- Our business has grown almost exclusively through referrals, and I’m only really just appreciating the magnitude of that now. Every time you e-intro us or mention us and we hear about it later, it makes us SO happy. I’m shouting out 12 people that sent us the most incredible clients this last year. Seriously: we are so lucky. Thank you: Jill, Vivian, Anna, Oana, Claudia, Clare, Laura, Julie, Alexandra, Trevor, Lana, Linda. 🙏

A full circle moment. Life is so wild! 25 years ago, I worked at Costco Wholesale (Vancouver location). It was one of two jobs that got me through college. I was a front-end cashier and also worked in the bakery department this time of year to pick-up extra shifts (I made epic Rum Balls). So today's trip into Costco was a pretty surreal one. Seeing the joni® 21st-Century Period Care™ end cap at the #Langford location was emotional for a lot of reasons. But mostly because it's just so aligned with our mission of making sustainable period care accessible to every body.
