We envision an equal and just society for all women and people who experience gender-based discrimination.
About us
West Coast LEAF is the first and only organization in BC dedicated to using the law as a strategy to work towards an equal and just society for all women and people who experience gender-based discrimination. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped bring about some of Canada’s most important feminist victories for reproductive rights, workplace standards, fairness in family law, legal protections from sexual harassment, and more. In collaboration with community, West Coast LEAF uses litigation, law reform, and public legal education to create social change. While we are focused on issues in British Columbia, we also take action in matters of national significance that are important to the equality and human rights of people in British Columbia. We aim to transform society by achieving: Access to healthcare Access to justice Economic security Freedom from gender-based violence Justice for those who are criminalized Family well-being

“Nobody should be barred from seeking safety for themselves,” says West Coast LEAF Director of Litigation Kate Feeney. “We don’t like to see the politicization of government policies, and a move away from policies that are evidence-based and equity-driven, to score political points.” Find the link to the full article at https://lnkd.in/gqfRtqey to learn more about how this will limit access for Indigenous people, LGBTQ2S+ people and victims of gender-based violence to change their legal names. #HumanRights #IndigenousRights #GenderAffirmingCare #BCPoli #SexWorkerRights #SexWorkIsWork #SupportSexWorkers #SupportSurvivors

Shout-out to interACT: Advocates for Intersex Youth for their excellent brochure on reproductive justice for intersex people, released last month. On the Intersex Day of Solidarity and every day, advocates for reproductive justice and reproductive self-determination should reflect on how to make our movements relevant and inclusive for intersex people.

Alongside other gender equity orgs, we’re demanding an immediate repeal of the Name Amendment Act that creates unnecessary barriers and devastating impacts on the most marginalized communities in need of legal name changes. No one should be subjected to invasive and traumatic processes on their journey to find safety from violence, access gender-affirming care, or reclaim their Indigenous names. Read the press release to learn more about how this Amendment violates equality rights of these communities under the Charter and BC Human Rights Code: https://lnkd.in/e5A7EaJz #HumanRights #IndigenousRights #GenderAffirmingCare #BCPoli #SexWorkerRights #SexWorkIsWork #SupportSexWorkers #SupportSurvivors
