🌿 Drawing inspiration from nature, the University of Alberta Botanic Garden Main Entry Pavilion design emulates the appearance and structure of a leaf or flower petal. The pavilion provides spaces for ticketing, displays, concessions, washrooms and a large covered outdoor gathering space. The building also includes a glazed entranceway and a spacious interior, providing visitors with a comfortable and inviting space to gather and prepare for their visit to the garden. The roof is made of Western Archrib mass timber and is supported by a series of steel columns, giving the structure a dynamic and organic feel. Glued-laminated timber panels are supported by a series of radial glued-laminated beams to best accommodate the complex geometry. Amazing project team on this one! The Sam Centre at the The Calgary Stampede grounds is where tradition meets modern design, with #masstimber taking center stage. This 30,000-square-foot space isn’t just a building—it’s a living celebration of Stampede culture, blending Alberta’s deep agricultural roots with a fresh, immersive experience for today’s visitors. Mass timber beams, supported by a hybrid steel frame, form the core of this structure, offering both strength and warmth. The design is inspired by Alberta’s classic barns and farm buildings, connecting visitors to the region’s heritage. As Bill Gary, Chair of the Calgary Stampede Foundation, puts it, “For decades, people have gathered at this location, and we are thrilled to continue that tradition with this new community hub.” The Centre’s innovative use of timber also makes a sustainable choice, bringing together energy-efficient practices and adaptable spaces designed for exhibitions, hands-on activities, and storytelling experiences. Here, history isn’t just preserved—it’s lived, shared, and built upon. With mass timber at its heart, the Sam Centre stands as a place to remember, create, and connect across generations, celebrating the past while embracing the future. Volume of wood products used (m³): 256 m³ (9041 ft³) of lumber and sheathing U.S. and Canadian forests grow this much wood in: 1 minute Carbon stored in the wood: 207 metric tons of CO₂ Avoided greenhouse gas emissions: 80 metric tons of CO₂ Total potential carbon benefit: 287 metric tons of CO₂ Which is the approximate equivalent to: 32,284 gallons of gasoline saved. Poplar Hall is a project we’re proud to have helped shape, blending contemporary style with the natural warmth and versatility of wood. Located along the Fox River in Appleton, Wisconsin, this 10,000-square-foot multi-use event center is thoughtfully designed to make it a stand-out focal point for the area. The design centers on creating a welcoming, adaptable space, with exposed Western Archrib glulam columns and beams, and tongue-and-groove decking that lend a natural warmth and sophistication to the structure. Expansive two-story glazing and a glass panel overhead door open up panoramic views of the river, drawing the beauty of the outdoors right into the event space and creating a seamless indoor-outdoor experience. Poplar Hall shows what’s possible when wood is at the heart of design, creating spaces that feel alive, inviting, and ready for any occasion. We’re honoured to see our glulam contribute to a venue that brings people together so effortlessly and beautifully. 🦖🌎Dinosaurs and #masstimber, what on Earth could be the connection? Well... Kicking off the Mass Timber Plus Greenbuild International Conference & Expo is a tour of the soon-to-open Edelman Fossil Park & Museum of Rowan University. The 44,000 ft2 hybrid mass timber facility will be New Jersey’s largest public net zero building. Ennead Architects and KSS Architects used Western Archrib WestDek GLT panels and glulam to connect visitors to the Earth’s story while supporting sustainable architecture initiatives. Catch Andre Lema moderating the talk between Kenneth Lacovara, Thomas Wong and Andrew Sniderman on Wednesday, November 13 at 9:00AM on why was mass timber used in this project and what is the connection with dinosaurs. We’re honoured to see our glulam play a part in this project, one that inspires a deeper connection to the environment and what’s possible when design meets sustainability. P.S. Nikki Maxted, Giulia Natalini and Andre Lema are at booth 343 ready to chat about how we can help with your next project. The Station at Cochrane Crossing isn’t just another building in the Town of Cochrane, Alberta — it’s a reflection of Cochrane itself. From the beginning, this project was envisioned as a community beacon, and we’re proud to have played a role in bringing it to life with our #glulam that both complements and elevates GEC Architecture's vision. What makes this WoodWorks award-winning project truly stand out is the #masstimber design. The timber roof seems to float effortlessly, with cantilevered glulam beams that taper to a point at the end. It’s a structure that’s as visually compelling as it is functional. The warmth and strength of wood connect it beautifully to Cochrane’s natural landscape, creating a space that feels inviting and familiar. Every detail—from the polish of the floors to the glass curtain walls framing the timber structure—was selected to ground the building in the landscape and community. What our glulam brought to the table: ✅ A Sense of Lightness: The timber roof structure lends the building an airy, open feel, making it look like it belongs to the natural environment. ✅ Community Pride: With its clean, thoughtful detailing, the mass timber creates a unique identity, a space that residents can feel connected to and proud of. ✅ Durability and Sustainability: Glulam is not only sustainable but stands up to Alberta’s seasonal extremes, ensuring that The Station is a lasting part of the community. By weaving together natural materials and community-driven design, The Station at Cochrane Crossing has become more than a transit hub; it’s a symbol of Cochrane’s heart and heritage. We’re thrilled to have contributed to a project that will be cherished and used for generations. Imagine a retreat that invites you to pause, breathe, and reconnect with nature. The Galien River Retreat is just that – a tranquil, sustainable escape that brings people back to nature, all while setting a new standard for mass timber design. The WoodWorks award-winning Galien River Retreat project by Wheeler Kearns Architects brings out the best of wood's warmth and modern architecture, rooted in the natural landscape of Michigan. It’s designed to be a peaceful escape, where each element feels seamlessly integrated into the woodland setting along the Galien River. Western Archrib supplied the glulam beams that made this vision possible. The use of glulam here isn’t just structural—it’s foundational to creating that balance between open, expansive interiors and a close connection with nature. Glulam’s natural grain and warmth bring in an organic, calming feel that complements the large windows and wood features. It’s the kind of warmth that blends effortlessly with the riverside setting, creating a space that feels like an extension of the landscape itself. Working on the Galien River Retreat was an example of how materials like glulam help create structures as resilient as they are welcoming. At Western Archrib, we love seeing our products support designs inviting people into nature without feeling out of place.
