Using Dragonette hyperspectral imagery, the ratio between chlorophyll and carotenoids can be measured with a calculated value called the Plant Senescence Reflectance Index (PSRI). When a plant is stressed or maturing (senescence), there will be a higher amount of carotenoids in its leaves. In this image captured over Hokkaido in late September, PSRI highlights rice paddies that are ready for harvesting. The light green fields in the natural color image represent rice paddies nearing harvest. In the PSRI image, these rice paddies present as purple and orange, with the orange areas having a higher carotenoid content. Many of the fields have already been cleared, which present as bright yellow. Other types of vegetation (trees or other crops not ready for harvest) present as black. Dragonette hyperspectral imagery helps identify optimal harvest time by measuring the compounds present within the leaves of a plant, as well as assessing the need for fertilizers and pesticides during growth. In addition, this imagery can be used to monitor large areas of agricultural land to better understand farming practices, crop yields, and land use. #wyvern #hyperspectral #satelliteimagery #spacetechnology #smallsat
