Last week Nina S. was honored to represent YATA-NATO Canada at the 70th General Assembly of the Atlantic Treaty Association (ATA) in Brussels. Also in attendance was President & CEO of NATO Association of Canada, Robert Baines. Over several days attendees heard from a remarkable lineup of experts who shared invaluable insights on evolving transatlantic dialogue and the current geopolitical landscape. Discussions focused on the importance of resilience and flexibility in the face of evolving global threats, with a special focus on European defense efforts and the challenges ahead in strengthening collective security. Topics that were highlighted included the threats posed by Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, as well as increasing regional instability and global competition. Ongoing Iranian actions were also emphasized as key concerns, alongside emerging challenges in other parts of the world. The event was also a great chance to connect with peers from the Atlantic Treaty Association and YATA International chapters, reinforcing the importance of international collaboration and mutual support.

This past week I had the privilege of representing The Youth Atlantic Treaty Association of Canada - NATO Association of Canada (YATA—NATO Canada), as their Advisor for Middle Eastern Affairs at the 70th General Assembly of the Atlantic Treaty Association (ATA) in Brussels. Over several days we heard from a remarkable lineup of experts who shared insights on evolving transatlantic dialogue and the current geopolitical landscape. The event was also a great chance to connect with peers from the Atlantic Treaty Association and YATA International chapters, reinforcing the importance of international collaboration and mutual support.

Thrilled to host our first in-person YATA—NATO Canada executive board meeting at the Royal Canadian Military Institute. In under a year, we’ve grown from zero to over 500 members, sent delegations across Europe and the globe, and built a strong team of leaders and sponsors. Challenges lie ahead, but Canada and its youth will be ready to rise to them.

YATA—NATO Canada firmly condemns the events that unfolded in Montreal this weekend. What occurred was not a peaceful protest against NATO but a display of violence, hate, and antisemitism—actions that are completely unacceptable. We remain steadfast in our commitment to education, advancing inclusion, and fostering mutual understanding. Together, we must work to build a community that unequivocally rejects hate and stands united against antisemitism, intimidation and violence.
