There are renewed fears among shippers as Canadian rail workers have voted overwhelmingly to re-authorize strike action—the previous strike was paused by the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to assess if rail services are essential. With ongoing unresolved negotiations and potential supply chain disruptions looming, shippers are preparing for mid-July impacts. While this is a natural extension of our core business, integrating a new line of business is never an easy feat. Admittedly, our new division isn't yet where we know it can be. Do you know how much dock workers at ports earn? You might be surprised! The reporting of more disruption at the Port of Montreal [sorry, friends in logistics and supply chain!] led me to wonder what the union strikes are all about. The latest 'final' deal [rejected by the union] would leave the average dock worker on $143,790. Out of curiosity, some research highlighted the huge variance in wages across locations in North America. It seems wages of ~$81,000 are typical for an experienced worker, AND additional benefits and overtime (and location) can make this considerably higher. How much higher? At high-cost locations, such as New York and New Jersey, dock workers can earn ~$350,000 a year. In lower-cost regions, average earnings are $170,000 - $200,000. No wonder the ports want to invest in more automation and streamlining! #logistics #supplychain #supplychainmanagement #shipping

As posted very early this morning, the Canadian Rail Strike is officially in effect as of 12:01 a.m. today. Both Canada and U.S. supply chains will further feel the impact now that a work stoppage and strike are official. Having written a series for many months, when this was not even newsworthy and hardly reported, it has now unfortunately come to fruition. Canada's railways are facing a strike. Since Canada’s ocean ports are incredibly dependent on rail, we’ve already provided alternative shipping options for our customers to avoid delays from a potential strike. Keep in mind, if the Port of Vancouver also strikes this disruption will have greater consequences with longer lasting implications. A lot could happen between now and the pending strike date. If you haven’t spoken to a Robinson expert about this yet, now is the time. The impact is far wider than just Canadian rail or ocean imports/exports, it will reach across modes and countries.

For my friends up north (and I mean way north, a.k.a., the tundra of Canada), I wanted to share two charts showing that trucking prices in Canada continue to closely mirror those we observe in the USA. Canadian PPI data can be obtained from https://lnkd.in/gBvpgY3b. Two charts. Thoughts: •Top chart shows the general freight trucking, long-distance PPIs for Canada (red) and the USA (blue), where 100 = 2012. This includes over-the-road dry van TL as well as LTL. Canada’s data only stretches through December, whereas US data is through March. We continue to see a near-perfect correspondence between the series. •The same story holds, for specialized freight trucking, long-distance sector (e.g., chemicals, dry bulk, finished motor vehicles, etc.). The really test will be Q1 Canada data when it comes out, as we have seen a drop in the USA PPI. My guess is that we will indeed see this drop. •Two things are incredibly encouraging about these observed relationships: [1]: Conceptually, we should expect trucking prices in Canada and the USA to be very tightly integrated given cross-border trade. And this is the case. [2]: We have two independent statistical agencies that are both arriving at the same conclusions. Talk about a robust check of the response process generating the data! Implication: Canadian and U.S. PPI data not only show how there is one integrated market for long-distance trucking services, but they provide confidence that each nation’s statistical agencies have a sound methodology for collecting and reporting these data.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has updated plans for the launch of the CBSA Assessment and Revenue Management (CARM) digital initiative, aimed at modernizing duties and tax collection for goods entering Canada. While the internal launch remains on schedule for May 13, the launch for trade chain partners is rescheduled to October 2024 due to potential operational disruptions from ongoing strike vote activity. Despite the delay, CARM is ready for rollout, with over 71,500 registered importers prepared, representing over 92% of imported goods. The initiative, supported by extensive consultation and testing, promises streamlined processes, enhanced compliance efforts, and improved functionality for importers. The latest news from Canada is not positive. Canadian logistics managers are preparing for potential disruptions in the face of a railroad workers strike, involving nearly 10,000 union workers. If the strike happens, it could paralyze freight movement, especially through Canada’s western ports, and then ripple into the trucking and other transport sectors. Contingency plans include shifting freight tracks and using alternative entry points in North America. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has announced that the implementation of Release 2 of the CBSA Assessment and Revenue Management (CARM) initiative will be delayed until October 2024 for trade chain partners. Release 2 had been scheduled to go live on May 13, 2024, however, officials have resolved that a delay is necessary to ensure that CBSA is able to better support members of the trade community through the transition to Release 2. CBSA’s announcement read in part: CARM will launch internally at the CBSA on May 13, as planned, to advance the Agency’s compliance and enforcement efforts. However, as a result of strike vote activity now underway by the Public Service Alliance of Canada and the possible impact on the Agency’s operations in the event of a positive strike vote, it is the intention of the CBSA to reschedule the launch for trade chain partners to October 2024. This will ensure that the Agency can support partners as they start using CARM. Therefore, until the fall, trade chain partners will continue to operate as they have. https://lnkd.in/gGUm2_Hd
