Yesterday, Prime Minister Trudeau announced his intention to resign as Prime Minister and Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada following a Liberal leadership race that will take place in the coming weeks. It is likely, but not guaranteed that a federal election will follow in the Spring. CME is very concerned that this prolonged political uncertainty will weaken Canada's ability to negotiate effectively with the incoming U.S. administration in the weeks ahead. In response to the tariff threat, Canada needs a functional and stable government, capable of delivering an urgent and coordinated response to protect manufacturing businesses, workers and families. Despite these challenges CME remains committed to working with members, our U.S. counterparts, and all parliamentarians to oppose harmful tariffs and to advocate for policies that will support Canadian manufacturers, strengthen our shared economic and national security interests with the U.S, and improve North America’s position as a global manufacturing powerhouse.

  • Tariffs pose a serious threat to Canadian manufacturing, risking $600 billion in exports and countless jobs.

Canada needs an urgent and coordinated response to the growing tariff threat that will endanger nearly $600 billion in exports to our largest trading partner, two-thirds of which are manufactured goods.   CME consulted manufacturers on the impacts of potential tariffs in December and the message is clear: tariffs will have devastating impacts on Canadian manufacturers, workers, and families. See the key findings from our survey below:

Yesterday, CME members met with Minister Mary Ng along with senior officials from Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada and the Prime Minister’s Office to share examples of how damaging U.S. tariffs will be on Canadian manufacturers and their workers and discuss the need for an urgent and coordinated response from governments. CME will continue working closely with the federal and provincial governments and our manufacturing partners in the U.S. to illustrate how harmful this proposal will be to manufacturers on both sides of the border and support efforts to strengthen our shared economic and national security.

CME's newest survey highlights the potentially devastating impact U.S. tariffs would have, revealing that nearly nine in ten Canadian manufacturers would face significant or very severe impacts on their business if the U.S. imposes tariffs on Canadian imports. That's why CME is calling for stronger government action to protect Canada's manufacturing sector, the cornerstone of our economy: "Tariffs will endanger nearly $600 billion in exports to our largest trading partner, two-thirds of which are manufactured goods. These findings show why we need an urgent and coordinated response from governments to protect manufacturing businesses, workers and families. Failure to do so will be devastating for our economy.” - Dennis Darby P.Eng., ICD.D Additional survey findings include: Manufacturers are taking pre-emptive measures to mitigate tariff risks:  ⛔ 30 per cent are accelerating shipments to the U.S ⛔ 30 per cent have postponed planned investments ⛔ 22 per cent have implemented hiring freezes Business impacts will worsen once tariffs are implemented: ⛔ 48 per cent of manufacturers will consider a hiring freeze or laying off workers ⛔ 46 per cent will consider postponing or cancelling planned capital investments ⛔ 49 per cent will considering shifting some production to the U.S. Read the release and a summary of CME's for government action here: https://lnkd.in/d4gytw8d
