Memorial University’s blue whale skeleton, Altum, is a symbol of Memorial’s leadership in all things ocean! It’s inspiring to see students, faculty, and staff actively engaging with all kinds of ocean-related initiatives at our recent Whale of a Day. I hope the 1000 visitors that day felt a connection to their future roles in ocean conservation, continuing our tradition of caring for and exploring the wonders of the sea. Thanks to a generous donation from the Dobbin Family, Altum has been making waves at three Whale of a Day events! Altum was central to our Big Splash initiative, where we dove into all things oceanic. We’ve hosted a naming contest and featured Altum merchandise in the bookstore and on a whale informational display. All of these initiatives have been wonderful examples of collaboration across many units and have been recognized with a CCAE Prix d’Excellence Gold Award and a CASE Silver Award. Altum has been a wonderful impetus of creativity and community engagement! #whaleofaday #oceans #memorialuniversity #marineinstitute

Check out this upcoming event! "Creating Environmentally and Socially Responsible Sustainable Energy and Resource Development in the Arctic." Can extractive industries and host communities in the North find common ground for mutual prosperity without compromising the environment? Join Dr. John Sandlos (Department of History, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Memorial University, Newfoundland and Labrador) and Dr. Karin Buhmann (Department of Management, Society and Communication, Copenhagen Business School) to find the answer to this important question. Dr. Mark Stoddart (Department of Sociology, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, MUN) will facilitate. The presentation will discuss what history can teach us about the social and environmental costs of natural resource extraction, and how can we apply those lessons for a sustainable future. 🔵 John Sandlos is an environmental historian, who has written extensively on the history of mining and wildlife conservation in northern Canada. He has co-authored two books with Arn Keeling. The first one, Mining Country: A History of Canada’s Mines and Miners (Lorimer, 2021) and their next one about the history of arsenic pollution at Giant Mine is now forthcoming with McGill-Queen’s University Press. 🔵 Karin Buhmann is a professor in the Department of Management, Society and Communication, Copenhagen Business School. Her research focuses on sustainability and responsible business conduct with an emphasis on social issues, especially climate change mitigation; business responsibilities for human rights; and sustainable finance.
