I recently had the privilege of presenting part of my research at the 3DBODY.TECH Conference & Expo held in Lugano, Switzerland on October 22-23. The presentation focused on the intricate relationship between body shape and the fit and functionality of stretch knit garments, particularly in women’s upper body garments. Achieving an optimal fit in this context requires more than simply matching measurements; it necessitates a thorough understanding of the unique contours and proportions of the women's body. Traditional pattern drafting approaches, which often rely on proportional measurement charts and fixed ease values, frequently fall short of accommodating this variability. To effectively address the diversity of body shapes, garment pattern development must adopt a more scientific and adaptive approach one that accounts for individual body size, shape, proportions, and fabric characteristics. By moving toward this understanding, we can develop garments that provide both comfort and functionality, tailored to fit real bodies rather than theoretical standards. I’m deeply grateful to my supervisors ,Dr Jayamali de silva, and Dr Simeon Gill, and Dr Ranga Abeysooriya, whose invaluable support and insightful guidance have been instrumental throughout this journey. Their encouragement and expertise have not only shaped this research but also enriched my understanding in countless ways. A special thanks as well to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK for the Split-site PhD scholarship and University of Moratuwa, The University of Manchester which made this research possible. Special thanks to Nicola D'Apuzzo, PhD for organising such an outstanding and impactful conference, your efforts created a truly inspiring environment for innovation and exchange. I’d also like to express my gratitude to Gerald Ruderman for expertly chairing our session and creating a great space for sharing insights with others.
