In 1944, civil #aviation was just at the beginning, with only a few million passengers taking to the skies each year. Fast forward to 2024, and that number has soared to almost 5 billion passengers annually! This leap reflects how aviation has transformed global #mobility, bringing people closer and enabling a world where distance is no longer a barrier. Stay tuned as we continue our journey through 80 years of civil aviation. #AviationBenefits #ICAO80 #AviationThenAndNow

Did you know? Pilots and #airtraffic controllers use the same standard language and procedures worldwide! On a flight from Dubai to New York, aeroplanes cross multiple airspaces—each with its own air traffic control (ATC) systems. Seamless communication between these systems is vital for safe, efficient travel. This coordination is made possible by International Civil Aviation Organization standards, which ensure that ATC protocols and communication practices are aligned across our skies. #ICAO80 #AviationBenefits

Two weeks of discussions at #COP29 have come to an end, and it is encouraging to see that parties have now agreed on one of the core frameworks (the “Article 6” discussions) that allow countries to cooperate in meeting national #climatetargets by transferring emissions reductions and removals between states, and with international aviation through #CORSIA. This should enhance the accessibility of high-quality #carboncredits and create more opportunities for countries and industries to meet their #climate goals. For #aviation, this progress supports the sector’s target to achieve #netzero carbon emissions by 2050, and fosters greater investment in #sustainable development and emissions reduction projects.

Nearly 80 years ago, the signing of the Chicago Convention changed the world, launching an era of global connectivity with the birth of civil #aviation. Since 1944, civil aviation has grown from a visionary idea into a global reality that connects people, cultures, and businesses across continents. The International Civil Aviation Organization has created a harmonised system across 193 countries to ensure safe and efficient worldwide travel, transporting more than 98 billion people over the last eight decades. Leading up to the 80th anniversary of the Chicago convention, join us on a journey through aviation’s evolution from 1944 to 2024. #AviationBenefits #ICAO80 #AviationThenAndNow

Today's #UNFCCC #COP29 Presidential Event - jointly organised by International Civil Aviation Organization, #Azerbaijan and #SaudiArabia - will focus on the recent achievements in addressing the impact of international aviation on #climatechange. We are looking forward to hearing from Jane Hupe, Envoy of ICAO Secretary General to UNFCCC COP, Rashad Nabiyev, Minister of Digital Development and Transport of the Republic of #Azerbaijan, and His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al-Saud, Minister of Energy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The opening remarks will be followed by a panel discussion where ATAG Executive Director Haldane Dodd discusses international #aviation in the context of climate change with Nazim Ziyadov, Deputy Director, State Civil Aviation Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Musaab Almulla, Vice President of Energy and Economic Insights at aramco, Jamie Leather, Director of Transport Asian Development Bank (ADB), Samir Rzayev, President of AZAL - Azerbaijan Airlines, and Marie Owens Thomsen, SVP of Sustainability and Chief Economist of International Air Transport Association (IATA). The panel will put the spotlight on strategic investment opportunities, effective policy-making, and innovative technologies that are crucial for driving aviation’s #energytransition.

On Wednesday afternoon at #COP29 in #Baku, ACI EUROPE is putting the focus on the role of #airports in aviation’s #energytransition. ACI World - Airports Council International Director General Justin Erbacci, Jane Hupe, Envoy of the #ICAO Secretary-General to UNFCCC COP, and ATAG Executive Director Haldane Dodd will discuss where we stand on the road to #netzero and how to tackle the bottlenecks that remain in the scaleup of sustainable aviation fuels (#SAF). Measures like the Airport Carbon Accreditation framework already act as catalysers for aviation climate action on the ground. But how do we ensure SAF becomes a global commodity? What are the roles of airports, air navigation service providers, fuel suppliers, OEMs, financial institutions, and governments in this process? If you are in Baku, join us for this engaging discussion and be part of shaping the future of a sustainable future for aviation. #NetZero #ACI #AviationClimateAction #SAF
