🌟 We are thrilled to welcome Colin Gomez to our team as Composite Materials Engineer! 🌟 After the successful completion of his Master’s thesis at Owens Corning, one of our strategic partners, Colin joined the EPFL’s esteemed Laboratory for Processing of Advanced Composites (LPAC)—a key research partner of ours—as a Composite Process Engineer. There, he worked alongside Professor Veronique Michaud, a renowned expert in composites and a valued member of our advisory board. Colin then transitioned to Airbus, where he contributed as a Materials and Processes Engineer in their composites laboratory. Most recently, he gained experience in recycling processes and recycled product development at Tyre Recycling Solutions. In his new role, Colin will help us push the boundaries of sustainable composite recycling, ensuring we deliver the highest-quality, most reusable reclaimed materials. His work will directly contribute to keeping waste out of landfills and reducing CO₂ emissions by enabling circularity in composite production. 🎁 A Package Delivery to Celebrate!   At Composite Recycling, we were thrilled to take delivery of our first industrial-scale recycling unit, powered by our proprietary thermolysis recycling solution. This delivery - which came just in time for the holidays - is the culmination of 3 years of research, testing and development in partnership with our technical, academic, and corporate partners.   A huge thank you to Fiberloop for their hard work and collaboration over the past couple of years. They have expertly designed and assembled the new-to-the-world unit to meet the unique specs of our patent-pending thermolysis process. The net result is an outstanding piece of engineering that delivers a next-generation recycling solution eagerly awaited by us - and our clients around Europe and beyond! 🔬Initial tests of the machine have yielded excellent results, particularly in terms of glass fibre recovery, confirming its superior performance and innovative design.   This machine is exclusively for our operations, supporting our mission to deliver advanced composite recycling solutions and close the loop on composite waste. 🌍 Collaborating for Circularity in Composites 🌍 Composite Recycling and nlcomp® have teamed up to push the boundaries of recyclability in thermoplastic composites. Recent tests using our thermolysis-based recycling approach on nlcomp®’s rComposite® material yielded the following results: ✅ High-quality reclaimed fibers with minimal impurities, meaning excellent reuse potential. ✅ Oil recovery with nearly 80% methylmethacrylate content, a key ingredient for producing high-performance new plastics and resins. ♻️ What happens when US landfills say ‘no’ to wind turbine blades? For us at Composite Recycling, Europe was the natural starting point for our recycling efforts, given the mounting EU regulations against the landfilling of composite waste. With countries like Austria, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, and the UK already restricting the landfilling of wind turbine blades specifically, there are already strong incentives to encourage recycling. 🌍 We didn’t see the same level of urgency in the US market — but that’s beginning to change. As this article from Cowboy State Daily highlights, some US landfills are turning away turbine blades, leaving many scratching their heads about what to do with them instead, and causing an increasing number of wind turbine blade "boneyards" like we saw first-hand in Texas. 🌬️ Latest recyclability testing results: Wind turbine blades 🌍 After quite the journey—from Sweetwater to Switzerland via Swaziland (yes, really!)—we finally received and processed the wind turbine blade waste samples from our visit to Texas.  And the first results are in: the quality of the reclaimed glass fibers (pictured here) meets our client specifications for reuse. This is a key first step in developing a robust approach for these hard-to-recycle materials. What's next: 🔬 Analysis of the oil recovered during the process  🔬 Analysis of the foam, which can be tricky as it may contain toxic materials So stay tuned for updates. Understanding and addressing the challenges posed by each component will pave the way for us to deploy a comprehensive, industry-scale recycling solution for wind turbine blade waste. 🚀 And thanks again to the town of Sweetwater, Odessa College, UT's IC2 Institute and the Permian Energy Development Lab for the Texas-sized welcome! 📸 More results from our technical team: Reclaiming and reusing intact woven fibers ✨ When we started, the fibers we reclaimed using our thermolysis process could only be used to make new chopped stranded mat fiberglass. Already this was a big win, vs landfilling them, or even recycling them into fuel or filler.  But at Composite Recycling our tech team is always pushing the envelope to optimize our recycling process - and increase the value of the recovered outputs - so we didn't stop there. Here’s a new milestone achievement we’re proud to share: a piece of fiberglass composite that we made from the woven glass fibers that we recovered intact from a client's production scrap. 🌟 What makes this noteworthy? The ability to reclaim woven fiberglass is an industry first, opening up many new high-value applications for recycled composites. Similar to the post we shared on Tuesday about the woven carbon fibers we reclaimed intact, recovering the undisturbed fibers and reusing them in new production means we cut out one of the most energy-intensive aspects of producing composites.  When used in combination with Arkema’s outstanding Elium recyclable resin, our approach reduces CO2 emissions by an amazing 70-90%!
