The last planned round of negotiations for a Global #PlasticsTreaty begins today at #INC5 in Busan, Republic of Korea. The development of a legally binding UN treaty is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to tackle the plastic pollution crisis in a globally coordinated way. We, a group of 260+ global businesses, financial institutions and NGOs across the plastics value chain, stand ready to work together with policymakers across the world. There is no time to waste on this critical task. With limited time left for negotiations, reaching an agreement on everything at #INC5 may be challenging. Given this, we have developed a Roadmap towards an effective Global Plastics Treaty that is fit for purpose. Explore our ‘Treaty on a Page’ here: https://lnkd.in/d534gqMf

🌍 Live from INC-5: Why Production Limits Are Essential As INC-5 negotiations continue in Busan, a critical question emerges: Can we truly address plastic pollution without tackling production volumes? Earth Action’s report with WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Evaluating Progress: Circularity vs. Footprint, provides a clear answer: we cannot. The findings highlight that without addressing the sheer volume of plastic produced, measures like eco-design and increased recycling capacity will not be enough to curb leakages into the environment. As Martina Gallato from EA - Earth Action recently stated, “Corporate recycling efforts alone won’t stop the surge of plastic waste.” The same holds true on a systemic level—unless production is capped, gains in circularity will be outpaced by the growth in plastic demand. 📘 Key Insights from the Report: - Recycling and eco-design are critical but insufficient without addressing upstream production. - Global policies must target production limits to complement downstream solutions. - A holistic treaty framework must tackle both circularity and the plastic footprint for lasting impact. 🔗 Read the report: Progress in Plastic Pollution: Circularity vs. Footprint https://lnkd.in/eY9UMA8H INC-5 represents a historic opportunity to set ambitious global measures, including production caps, that align with the treaty’s ultimate goal of stopping plastic pollution. It’s time to address the root cause, not just the symptoms. 💬 What’s your perspective on the role of production limits in solving the plastic crisis? Let’s discuss. 📖 Read Martina Gallato’s full interview with Packaging Gateway—link in comments. #INC5 #PlasticsTreaty #PlasticPollution #ProductionLimits #CircularEconomy #EarthAction

🌍 INC-5: Will Chemicals of Concern Make the Cut? As INC-5 negotiations progress in Busan, one critical question looms: Will the treaty address chemicals of concern and product design standards effectively? The stakes couldn’t be higher. Plastics aren’t just a waste problem—they’re a chemical problem. Harmful additives, found in everyday products, pose risks to human health and ecosystems alike. Without clear global standards to phase out these chemicals, we risk perpetuating a system where plastics harm more than they help. Our recent report, "Adding It Up," dives into the role of additives in plastics and why tackling them is essential for a safe, circular economy. The report highlights: * The health and environmental risks linked to key plastic additives. * The need for transparency in chemical disclosure across the value chain. * Recommendations for businesses and policymakers to align with a circular economy vision. 📊 Chemicals of concern must be central to the treaty. Their inclusion will send a strong signal to businesses and drive the innovation needed to reduce reliance on harmful plastics. 🌐 Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eCmV5QvD 💬 What provisions do you think are most critical for the UN Plastics Treaty? #INC5 #PlasticsTreaty #ChemicalsOfConcern #CircularEconomy #PlasticAdditives #EarthAction

🌍 Plastic Pollution is a Financial Risk—Here’s Why With INC-5 negotiations underway, it’s time to look at an often-overlooked piece of the puzzle: the financial risks tied to plastic pollution. In our latest blog post, we dive into why current valuation models miss the mark and how integrating plastic-related risks could drive smarter, more sustainable investments. 💡 Highlights: Financial models don’t account for the massive health and environmental costs of plastic. “A plastic footprint score could transform how investors assess high-risk companies and push for real action.” Our pilot study with Plastic Soup Foundation and ASR reveals the game-changing potential of linking plastic data to financial decisions. 🔗 Read the blog: https://lnkd.in/eSPxdBuS This ties directly to the findings in our new report with WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, "Enabling Corporate Plastic Disclosure: Unlocking Private Finance." The report outlines how corporate plastic data can bridge the gap between operations and finance, offering practical steps for businesses to reduce their plastic footprint while unlocking investment. 📘 Check out the report here: https://lnkd.in/eyFn4bTe ✨ Special thanks to our amazing team behind this work: Irene Hofmeijer, Charlotte Stalder, and Riccardo De Gennaro, PhD for their expertise and dedication to pushing these insights forward. #INC5 #PlasticPollution #PrivateFinance #EarthAction

Ahead of the final round of UN negotiations for a Global Plastics Treaty industry leaders and leading campaigners have called for a “comprehensive” reassessment of global plastic production. Led by plastic-free sportswear brand Mover Plastic Free Sportswear, the group includes mission-driven consultancy firm EA - Earth Action, and campaigners, A Plastic Planet and the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL). The industry leaders emphasise that recycling alone is not a sufficient solution to tackle plastic pollution effectively, stating it is a “band-aid solution that will fail to address the tide of plastic waste”. “Relying on recycling to address the plastic crisis is not enough. The current rate of plastic recycling barely scratches the surface. The complexity of plastic materials and poor infrastructure mean most plastic is never truly recycled. Without reducing overall plastic production, recycling will continue to be a band-aid solution that cannot stem the tide of plastic waste." Julien Boucher, Founder of EA - Earth Action.
