Info

Edmond de Rothschild Family Philanthropy represents a philanthropic legacy that has continued for over 150 years. Today, the focus is on innovative and scalable initiatives that benefit both current and future generations: On the one hand, operational foundations which raise funds to run and manage their own programmes, specifically a leading non-profit hospital, HFAR, specialized in head and neck; a child protection NGO, OPEJ, active in the greater Paris area; and the Edmond de Rothschild Partnerships, carrying out leadership programmes for youth from diverse backgrounds. On the other hand, there are Edmond de Rothschild grant-making foundations, which provide financial support to other organisations, focusing in particular on talent development and innovative models for change in society. These foundations share a common belief in the power of change-makers to transform the world and are a testament to the family’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and care for all.

  • Why does Geneva have a street named Rothschild?   The story begins with a gust of wind and a speck of coal. While traveling in the 1850s, Adolphe de Rothschild suffered an eye injury and sought treatment in Geneva. The skillful care he received left a profound impression on him, sparking a commitment to ensure others – independent of their social status - could access the same level of care. 150 years ago, in 1874, he founded a groundbreaking eye clinic in Geneva, dedicated to providing free, treatment to society’s most vulnerable. Over the next century, the hospital treated more than 266,000 patients. But Adolphe’s vision didn’t end there. Through Julie, his widow, his mission expanded to Paris. The Fondation Adolphe de Rothschild to lead in ophthalmology and head-and-neck treatment —bridging 19th-century compassion with 21st-century innovation. That is why Adolphe de Rothschild’s name endures, etched into Geneva's streets and in the history of the city and beyond. • “Since joining DUO, I’ve stopped aging!” By pairing young people from immigrant backgrounds seeking employment with mentors over 50, DUO for a JOB tackles two critical challenges: youth unemployment and the untapped potential of senior professionals. With over 8,000 mentorship duos created in just 10 years, the results speak for themselves: 50% of mentees find employment within 12 months and 90% of mentors continue with a new mentee. The initiative doesn’t just help mentees build confidence and networks; it also empowers mentors to stay active and valued in society. As one mentor puts it: “Since joining DUO, I’ve stopped aging!” Programs like DUO for a JOB show how inclusion and collaboration can transform lives and communities. It’s a model worth replicating worldwide. It also makes us wonder how other intergenerational initiatives like this can reshape our societies. • Did you know that 120 years ago, in 1904, Edmond James de Rothschild and his brothers, Alphonse and Gustave, formalized a shared vision: improving the lives of Parisian workers by creating access to affordable, high-quality housing. What began as a family’s effort to address pressing social needs became a comprehensive initiative beyond housing. The project embraced a unique, holistic approach, integrating healthcare, education, nutrition, and child welfare into its programs. By the First World War outbreak, the project had built five major housing complexes across Paris, providing over 1,000 families with safe, sanitary homes and over 160 commercial spaces to support local businesses. These buildings were carefully designed with optimal ventilation, bright rooms, and communal facilities to promote health and well-being. Their efforts not only set new standards for social housing but also inspired others to follow and influenced the city’s decision to build thousands of affordable flats for families of modest income. • Amid a challenging political landscape, many are still striving to bring diversity into leadership, break down barriers, and combat the underrepresentation of Arab professionals and marginalized communities in decision-making roles—with the hope of creating a more inclusive society in Israel. Although Arabs comprise 21% of the population, they represent just 0.3% of managers in the top 50 companies. The Al-Mada program, developed by the Edmond de Rothschild Foundation (Israel), in collaboration with Kav Mashve - كاف مشفيه, equips Arab professionals with the tools to lead. Through workshops, mentorship, and global experiences at renowned institutions, the program empowers participants to rise above labels and unlock their potential. Earlier this year, a visit to the IMD Business School in Switzerland, as part of the Al-Mada program, was transformative—a rare moment for participants to be recognized for their talents, free from the challenges they carry at home. As one participant shared: “This program has opened a new chapter in my personal and professional life.” As alumni become role models, inspiring a new generation to believe leadership roles are attainable, programs like this are paving the way for a more equitable and inclusive future. • With a growing number of children being taken into care in certain countries, the need for support services that prioritize those young people is as essential as ever. Français ci-dessous ... Fondation OPEJ Edmond de Rothschild, whose history is intertwined with the Edmond de Rothschild Family Philanthropy, has worked with and for children since 1945, albeit with its services adapting to meet changing requirements over the decades. Its mission focuses on protecting, listening to, and helping children, adolescents, and young people in difficulty, as well as their families, from all backgrounds. Rather than simply being reactive, however, Fondation OPEJ Edmond de Rothschild also provides specialized prevention services, covering employment, integration, schooling, justice, health, housing, and access to rights. Its teams develop tools to address professional integration, school dropout, delinquency, radicalization, and other risky behaviors. Supporting some of the most vulnerable children in society requires dedication and focus; it requires organizations like Fondation OPEJ. • A Unique Collaboration for Music and Community Impact This week in Madrid, a meaningful gathering of two leading institutions, brought together by the Edmond de Rothschild Family Philanthropy, highlighted music's transformative power. Known for its dedication to artistic excellence and community impact and redefining music education by shaping musicians who inspire and uplift, Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía hosted a week of inspiring events. In partnership with Ensemble Connect—a program by Carnegie Hall that prepares young musicians for careers in classical music with a focus on teaching, social engagement, and leadership—they organized: 🔹 An inaugural concert for the Series 20/21 contemporary music series with Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical (CNDM) in Madrid, setting the tone for an innovative and collaborative week. 🔹 Interactive concerts with local organizations such as DaLaNota, where Ensemble Connect musicians and Escuola Reina Sofia students shared their passion with diverse communities. 🔹 A special performance of Terry Riley’s In C with musicians from Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid and Escola Reina Sofia, culminating in a roundtable exploring how to connect music with today’s audiences. Through these workshops, performances, and discussions, this residency fosters artistic and social growth, nurturing artists who connect deeply with audiences and make a meaningful impact in a society that is constantly changing. This collaboration embodies the power of music to bridge communities and inspire future generations to connect with them more diversely and creatively. How can we each foster collaboration in our work to create connections that make a difference?
