Last week, two of our members Michaël Fuser and Florent Piton had the opportunity to attend TECH&FEST in Grenoble alongside our main sponsor, Constellium! Constellium is a major supplier in the aerospace, automotive and packaging industries, and they provide us with high-performance aluminum for our rockets. At Tech&Fest, we had the chance to showcase our rockets and aluminum components on Constellium’s stand, engaging in valuable , fruitful discussions with engineers, industry professionals, and students. We also had the opportunity to give a 15' presentation on the main stage, where we tried to convince young students to engage in practical projetcs next to their studies. A key moment of the event was a 15-minute television interview with Le Dauphiné Libéré, where our member were able to put the ERT in the limelight, sharing details of our work and our collaboration with Constellium.Thank you to everyone who was present, and to everyone whose hard work allows us to always strive further! A talented team of students from EPFL building rockets for international competitions and to introduce students to space
Info
The EPFL Rocket Team (ERT) is a student association whose aim is to design and build rockets. The team, based at EPFL, is composed of about 200 students from different schools and universities in the canton of Vaud. ERT is currently supervising four student projects, and part of the work done by students is made as a part of accredited semester projects of EPFL. Project Bella Lui : The competition team designs and builds a large rocket each year to be launched in various international competitions. The ultimate goal? To win the Spaceport America Cup, the largest student competition of its kind, which takes place in June in the USA. The competition team also attends the European Rocketry Challenge that it helped to be created. Several challenges (target altitude, type and construction of the propulsion system, payload type) allow each team to surpass themselves year after year thought new rocket designs. Project Space Race : The Space Race team is mainly made up of early bachelor students. Their goal is to design and build smaller rockets that they will launch to obtain various certifications. Once trained, they have the opportunity to join the competition team. Project Icarus : The research and development team is currently gathered around the Icarus project. Its members, more experienced students, are trying to design a stabilisation system for the rocket. The goal is to be able to land it in the long term.

🚀 Preliminary Design Review for Hyperion P 🛠️ For over a year, the EPFL Rocket Team has been exploring satellite propulsion, focusing on plasma engines. The project’s goal is to design and test innovative propulsion technologies, starting with Pulsed Plasma Thrusters (PPT) and Hall-Effect Thrusters (HET). In parallel, a dedicated test bench is being developed to assess their performance under controlled conditions. This week, the Hyperion P subsystem held a Preliminary Design Review (PDR) discussing systems engineering integration, the thrust test bench, the power electronics unit for the Pulsed Plasma Thruster, and the Hollow Cathode design. This step is crucial in ensuring that every detail meets rigorous standards. Stay tuned for more updates! Special thanks to our members Matthieu Tonneau , Sarah Marciniak , and Joseph Spender! 🚀 Acoustic Levitation: Exploring Sound in different gravity settings 🔊 As part of EuRoC, every rocket must carry a scientific experiment. This year, we’re showcasing acoustic levitation—using sound waves to make a tiny polystyrene ball float mid-air - it might also be an aerogel one. The graph shows the acceleration felt by the payload, without letting the ball fall. By creating standing wave patterns, we generate pressure zones strong enough to counteract gravity—no strings, no magnets, just sound. Our experiment will sit in the nose cone of the Firehorn rocket, where it’ll be tested under the intense forces of a rocket launch! Looks cool, right?
