💘 For many people, Valentine’s Day is one of the most romantic days of the year. Unfortunately, there is nothing lovely about the amount of waste this holiday generates. Millions of boxes of chocolates, flowers and cards are gifted to loved ones. However, once the thrill of the holiday has faded and these presents are disposed of, many of them end up in landfill. There, these items not only contribute to pollution and carbon emissions but as they are resistant to decomposition, they also take a long time to break down. For example: 🍫 Chocolate boxes: 6 to 8 months 🌹 Flowers: 6 to 12 months 🎈 Balloons: 450 years 🍾 Champagne bottles: 4,000 years Geocycle provides the know-how to recycle such materials. In September 2023, Greece experienced unprecedented flooding that destroyed local communities, agricultural land, roads and railways. After the floods, proper waste management was essential to avoid blocking roads or contaminating water and soil, which can lead to safety hazards and health risks. 🇬🇷 Geocycle Hellas stepped up to help mitigate the risks associated with post-flood waste and debris build-up. Millions of electronic devices are thrown away every year, making e-waste one of the fastest growing categories of waste material in the world.  Unfortunately, e-waste often contains hazardous materials, such as lead and mercury. If not recycled or disposed of properly, they can release toxins into the soil or waterways. These damage the environment and threaten the health of local communities. Common e-waste products include: 🪫 Batteries 📱 Mobile phones 💻 Computers 💡 Lightbulbs 🏠 Household appliances 🏥 Medical equipment While Geocycle doesn’t handle e-waste first-hand, we support and advocate for proper waste sorting and separation. It is important to recycle waste at its highest value and to avoid associated contamination and negative environmental impacts.
