When you hear the word fluff, alternative fuel and raw materials probably aren't the first things that come to mind. However, fluff is one of the highest grades of refuse-derived fuel. The term refers to the fluffy nature of the materials – a combination of bits of plastic, paper and fiber that are shredded, compressed and packaged after the recycling process. Because fluff is less expensive than soil, it is often used as an alternative cover in landfills. However, fluff can contain polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), chemicals that can negatively impact the environment and our health. As a result, many recyclers are searching for new ways to decrease the use of fluff in landfill and make use of the material. Geocycle provides one such alternative. We work with industries and municipalities to collect this waste, recycle the raw materials it contains and transform it into an alternative fuel. We love to see how Geocycle teams around the world participated in #GeocycleWeek2024! Two environmental awareness days were organized in Colombia focusing on circular waste management and how we can protect local ecosystems. Over 300 kg of waste were collected in Nobsa with the assistance of local students and native vegetation was replanted in the forest. Geocycle Ecuador celebrated a big milestone during #GeocycleWeek2024 – the inauguration of the country’s first industrialized waste sorting station. With this new facility in Samborondón, Geocycle will be able to recover 20,000 tons of non-recyclable materials, divert it from landfill and transform it into resources. This will help reduce the city’s carbon footprint by 10%! “What started as an idea is now a reality,” said Luis Alberto Rivas, Head of Geocycle and Head of Sustainability at Holcim Ecuador. “This is the first big step towards a city where all waste has value for someone else, a city without garbage.” #LetsGeocycle #GeocycleCommunity #WasteManagement

Nearly 50 Geocycle Egypt employees took part in the #GeocycleWeek2024 events held on Qursaya island on the Nile River. ♻️The team participated in two activities: ·       A clean-up event to collect debris and plastic waste from the river using nets on boats  ·       An upcycling activity to transform old plastic bags into new products including pouches and wallets The events were planned by VeryNile, an organization dedicated to preserving the iconic waterway, recovering and recycling up to 35 tons of plastic waste every month. #LetsGeocycle #GeocycleCommunity 

For #GeocycleWeek2024, members of Geocycle Hungary got creative while also giving back to their local communities. 👕 The group gathered for a re-textile workshop to upcycle old clothes into new cosmetic bags. During this first session, they sorted the clothes and cut them into the ideal shape for their second life. 🧵 At a future event, additional team members will sew and put the finishing touches to the bags. The goal is to create around 50 bags to give to local schoolgirls to mark International Women’s Day on March 8, 2025. #LetsGeocycle #GeocycleCommunity #Upcycle 

What do children think about ecology and the environment? 🎨 To mark #GeocycleWeek2024, the Geocycle Poland team held a children’s drawing contest, titled “I think ECOLOGICALLY”, to find out! 🌱 Children were invited to illustrate activities that impact the environment - either positively or negatively.  The aim was to foster a deeper understanding of the importance of caring for the planet. 54 children took part in the competition, with their artwork judged by age group.
