Day two of National Apprenticeship Week and today I had the pleasure of attending the QA Ltd event, 'Purpose and Profit: The SROI of Apprenticeships'. There was a really interesting panel discussion on the social impact of Apprenticeships and QA's partnership with GIST Impact to share this insight with their clients. Had an amazing time attending the Sustainability Expo in London today! The panels and presentations covered a wide range of critical sustainability topics – from treating sustainability as a competitive advantage, leveraging Double Materiality to drive sustainability agenda, to the vital role of leadership in building resilient, sustainable organizations. Key takeaways: Tom Crawford, Global Head of Sustainability at Vodafone shared how they’re closing the digital divide by offering smartphones with cloud phone capabilities for under $14, empowering rural populations in Africa. Their work with M-PESA since 2007 is also a cornerstone in driving financial inclusion across the continent. Dr Márcia Balisciano, Chief Sustainability Officer at RELX discussed their long-standing commitment to sustainable practices, with a special focus on the RELX SDG Resource Centre – a fantastic content hub for UN SDGs. They’ve even mapped out patents that support individual SDGs. Natalie Deacon, Executive Director of Purpose and Sustainability at Avon talked about how Avon has integrated sustainability principles into their product development process. They’re addressing beauty industry waste with innovative solutions like refillable products, mono-material packaging for lipsticks, and reducing plastic through paperboard carriers. Her mantra? “Reach for the stars, but keep your feet on the ground.” In my previous post, I highlighted Ben Stone’s perspective on the importance of integrating stakeholder perspectives into sustainability strategies, like Kier Group’s shift to Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as an alternative to fossil fuels – but only if it's sustainably sourced. A recurring theme throughout the discussions was the role of CSRD reporting as the "elephant in the room", with some concerns over Omnibus declarations. The evolution of AI in ESG reporting and the need for strong leadership to drive sustainability efforts were also hot topics. As former Chief Economist at Mars Incorporated, he spearheaded the Economics of Mutuality for 15 years, collaborating with Oxford Saïd Business School and has redefined how businesses create and share value. He also authored influential books such as “Putting Purpose into Practice: the Economics of Mutuality”, co-founded academic centers, and advised global organisations like the World Economic Forum and BCG. He continues to pioneer transformative change through initiatives like ONE Society.
