Last week, #INC5 marked another step toward a global #treaty on plastic pollution. Even if it didn’t result in a finalized agreement, the discussions galvanized a shared commitment among 100+ countries to advocate towards an ambitious treaty to eradicate #plasticpollution. Countries agreed to continue negotiations based on an informal, draft Chair's Text. Divergence remains in three key areas: ➡️ Plastic Products and Chemicals of Concern: Debates on banning, regulating, or listing specific products and chemicals. ➡️ Plastic Supply and Production: Setting global targets to reduce primary plastic polymer production. ➡️ Financial Mechanism: Balancing a new independent fund versus existing mechanisms, while defining funding sources and beneficiaries. While more clarity is needed on these points, the global commitment to ending plastic pollution is clear and undeniable. The result of INC-5 reaffirmed the critical role of #multistakeholder collaboration in shaping a just and effective treaty. Looking ahead to INC-5.2 and beyond, the Global Plastic Action Partnership (#GPAP) will continue fostering dialogue across the plastic value chain, building capacity and thought leadership in critical areas including financing, trade, national action plans, gender equality and social inclusion, and biodiversity, while bringing local insights to global treaty discussions to ensure inclusive and actionable solutions. 📄 Explore: - INC-5 Chair's Text: https://lnkd.in/dpibgvz9 - GPAP's 2024 Annual Report: https://lnkd.in/dKQf-jhg
