IEC everywhere for a safer and more efficient world
Info
The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) brings together 170 countries, and more than 20,000 experts cooperate on the global IEC platform to ensure that products work everywhere safely with each other. The IEC is the world's leading organization that prepares and publishes globally relevant International Standards for the whole energy chain, including all electrical, electronic and related technologies, devices and systems. The IEC also supports all forms of conformity assessment and administers four Conformity Assessment Systems that certify that components, equipment and systems used in homes, offices, healthcare facilities, public spaces, transportation, manufacturing, explosive environments and energy generation conform to them. IEC work covers a vast range of technologies: power generation (including all renewable energy sources), transmission, distribution, Smart Grid, batteries, home appliances, office and medical equipment, all public and private transportation, semiconductors, fibre optics, nanotechnology, multimedia, information technology, and more. It also addresses safety, EMC, performance and the environment.

"Standards encompass such a broad range of topics that no one person can identify all the ways that gender might impact them. If we want standards to be gender responsive, I think the most important thing we can do is ask questions. We also need to be willing to challenge the answers we receive and ask follow-up questions. What is the evidence that is provided? How robust is the finding? Is the source reputable?" etech recently spoke with Michelle Parkouda, Manager of Research at the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) and Co-convenor of the ISO/IEC Joint Advisory Group on Gender Responsive Standards (GRS). The integration of AI and IoT is revolutionizing manufacturing by enabling real-time monitoring and analysis to improve productivity, safety, and profitability. One key benefit is predictive maintenance, which can save companies up to $50 billion by anticipating equipment breakdowns before they occur, minimizing downtime, reducing costs, and extending equipment lifespan. Unlike traditional maintenance methods, predictive maintenance uses sensors to collect real-time data, analyzed by AI, to accurately predict when equipment needs attention. However, challenges arise from incompatible technologies and varied prediction methods, making comparisons difficult. To help organizations embrace predictive maintenance, IEC has just published a new international standard. IEC 63270-1 provides guidance on predictive maintenance for industrial automation. How digital health is shaping the future of medical standards. etech caught up with Regina Geierhofer, the Secretary of the IEC Technical Committee (TC) which prepares standards for medical equipment. Regina shares insights on how digital health has fundamentally changed the approach of experts in her TC. “We have always written safety standards mainly with users who were in the medical profession in mind. Doctors, nurses, surgeons – they were the ones who use the equipment and do that safely. But with the advent of digital health, patients have more control over their health; they can for instance monitor it with wearables from wherever they are. That means we now should write standards while considering a growing user group, the patients.” Read the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/eQ8cXJvM #IECSafety #IECStandards #IECEtech #DigitalHealth #MedicalAI #EmergingTech #Innovation #IECforSDGs
